I did my engine and box earlier ths year using a specialist engine enamel from Frost.co.uk. It took a lot of work but really makes the engine bay look good, and stops that god aweful aluminium oxide building up and making it look nasty. Its expensive stuff at £25, but it goes a long way. Did two coats of the engine and box with plenty left over for other bits and pieces.

i got some engine enamel from halfords, iirc it was just over 10 quid and for a small pot really goes a long way!

I did my old Mi engine with hammerite. Works a treat you just need to make sure the engine is nice and clean and grease free

Be carefull here, if you're that bothered about having a nicley painted engine block, chances are it will bother you if it all flakes off like it did with mine.

Hammerite really isnt designed to cope with the heat, (niether is cheap Carplan engine paint I used).

I can't give you any advise on what to use but I rcommend you look into it a bit before you paint it.

Or you could just Bead blast it like I did my last one... Thats lasted well on mine and its certainly not going to flake off!

Trying to paint cast alloy and get it to stick properly and last a long time is difficult. Personally I'd rather see a bare alloy block with some oxide on it than a painted block with paint flaking off left right and centre.

The first engine I painted I used Hammerite, I was i a bit of a rush though so I didn't clean it as good as I should have, That lasted about 3 months.

The engine I painted with Carplan paint was degreased/shot blasted with loads of time spent cleaning.

It lasted upto about the second winter when it started to look crap!
