Split Cv Boot Seal

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I recently noticed that my offside CV boot seal has split and gunked grease all over the place. I'm not sure how long it's been like this and was wondering if it would be better to replace the whole offside drive shaft or just the boot seal?

The car does sound a little clunky from the left hand side when going over bumps, do you think this could be affected by the CV joint?

My last question is where is the best place to buy a drive shaft for a 1.6 gti?

Cheers for the help and no doubt I'll be back for more,

MacI

You need to check the joint for rotational play, if it seems OK then you can get away with a new boot, however you will need to thoroughly wash out all the old grease as it will be contaminated with dirt/grit. Then you can replace the boot. Alternatively if this sounds like a lot of grief you can get a reconditioned shaft from all the usual suspects, GSF/local motor factors.
