Mot Failure..

Recommended Posts

springs

I had my MOT last week and it failed.. most of the bits are easy but some of them needed a bit more work like some welding..

anyways. 2 things on the list im not sure about are:

Nearside front seat belt affected by an insecure seat fixing

Nearside front seat belt anchorage prescribed area is excessively corroded

does anyone know which bit there actually talking about? ive had a look around the passenger seat and cant really see much thats wrong..

The second point may be rust :)

If it's a certain distance from the mounting point they can sometimes fail you.

Unsure on the first though.

For the first point, there are only 3 bolts for the front seatbelt, one on the B pillar, one on the sill and the last actually attached to the seat for the buckle. Just check they are nipped up tight :)

I'd interpret that to mean the area where the belt buckles in. So it could be that bolt/s that hold it to the seat subframe are loose. The 2 alternatives - which may be bad wording from the tester, making it a bit ambiguous - are that it's actually the seat subframe that is loose (again check all bolts, but unfortunately these subframes have a tendancy to develope play, and I've had one fail an MOT and had to replace the whole subframe), or it could simply be the buckle itself that has worn and developed play in the mechanism.

Hmmmm. I'm going to guess at it being the lower point where the belt fits to a black metal bar. The reason I say this is because the 2 other points - top mount on the B pillar, and lower rear mount with the retracting mech - are both hidden behind trim. Since the MOT man cannot remove bits of the car, he's not be able to see if these areas are corroded. The lower front mount is only covered by carpet, so he may have been able to pull this back a bit. It also stands to reason that it is the most likely of the 3 points to suffer corrosion.

Is the bottom of the B pillar corroded per-chance? Common place for 205's to suffer and some MOT testers will fail the car because in theory its too close to the seat belt mount...

Sounds like you've got some bad rust within 30cm of the mounting point on the B piller or sill from that. Just have a look around those two areas, you should be able to spot the corrosion

Both the listed things could be the same area

Where the seat base bolts to floor could be rotten, making the seat base loose and would also be the excessive rust fail??? ;)

How did he get on with welding guys? Is it a fairly easy job to get the corrosion out?
