A Few Rear Beam Questions

yes i have searched before anyone shouts at me but couldnt find all the answers i needed.

 

1. are 205 and 309 trailing arms the same?

2. am i right in believeing all traling arm shafts are the same,even on base models etc?

3. how do you tell if a beam tube is knackered?? i know if the shafts are indented they are :lol:

2, yes

 

3, if you can see the outer edge of bearing casings inside the tube. all is good

If the bearings have totally colapsed and the arm pins have been pressing on the tube/bearing case the tube could be damaged.

When bearings are removed if the area that bearings sit on are not worn etc the tube is ok.

1, fitment wise yes, camber and toe vary.

 

2, yes, base model ones just have 2 plastic plugs.

 

3, pull the arm out and see if the shaft has worn through the bearing into the tube.

so basically if the bearings come out ok and dont look like they mashed to start with the tube should be a ok? :lol:

 

just another quick one. if the trailing arm shafts are indented abit cant the bearings just be fitted slightly further into the tube so they sit on a fresh bit of shaft? :lol: lol

Have read people on here saying that if the arm pins are only slightly pitted on bottom/top you can turn the pins so the damaged areas are on the front/back,is this ok to do??????? :blink:

Are the bearing easy enough to pull out if they are new, or do you need to use a tool to pull them out, carefully ?

I think the outer bearing is easy enough to get out, the inner one you need to bodge up a tool to get them out

the bearings are knocked out mate so you wouldnt want to if they are new lol.

Is it the beam tube thats longer?

Yes on the 309 beam and arms, except the 309 16v arms have more camber and toe.

There's loads of different camber and toe settings out there, so its definitely worth making sure you use a pair from the same vehicle!

the easiest way to knock out the inner bearings is to use an old trailing arm shaft.

 

it can also be used to knock in the new inner bearing, to a depth of about 20cm
