Can I start an engine with no oil in the gear box - ie. driveshafts not in so can't put transmission oil in yet. Is it ok to start/run the engine like this?

Yeah, no problem, just don't put it in gear!

I wouldn't, as the input shaft will still spin unless you hold the clutch pedal down.

I think that even in neutral gear, with the clutch pedal released the gears inside the gearbox are in rotation. Of course with no load, but they are moving

None of the gears are engaged with it out of gear though.

They are all still meshed, that is why it is technically called a constant mesh gearbox, e,g, the gears are constantly in mesh, and they may spin. Not to mention all the bearings will be running with no lubrication.

Personally I would not under any circumstance, but its your box so up to you.......

Thanks for the advice - I put some oil in it!

Next question is, is it ok to run the power steering pump with no fluid circulating?

No. The pump is lubricated by the fluid.

In other words, just put all the fluids in and then run it.
