i should think so, people have done it, they just might be slightly borderline at mot time as theyre supposed to be inside the arches. having said that my wheels stick out about 1.5 inches either side and i havent been pulled over or anything for it, although i havent had an mot since its been like it. you can get rallye arches relatively cheaply on ebay ;)

Ya I was planning to put GTi arches on. Just been offered a set of S1 Rallye steels (106) are these the same as 205?

Which size for tyres are recommended for 14" wheels?

And also which would fit best s1 or s2 106 wheels? I'm reckoning s1 would be easiest as they're narrower...

I'd go for S2 wheels and use 185 60 14 on a 205

Thats the size I used on mine, S2 6 x 14 106 Rallye steelies.

They fitted fine on an STDT which has the GTI arches / shell even when I lowered it about 30mm.

On a base model shell I'd stick with 185/55

Mines's base model but I'll be putting GTi arches on it soon. It's lowered 40mm at the front, I thinka bout 20mm the rear but will be evening it out

I ran S1s with 185/60s on a base model shell, lowered around 30mm, with no issues at all.
