Recommended Posts

hexhamstu

removed the wishbones from the car (so no transport) thought "yeah i'll just hammer them out, how hard can it be?". it really is quite hard to hammer these sons of bitches out!! so anyone in the area with the means to remove the bushes from me, i would be very, very willing to give you favours sexual or otherwise to help me remove them!

thank you!

Hi, I did this last weekend an it really is not that hard.

Blow-torch the bush untill the metal centers drop out. Then use a hack saw to cut through the outer metal ring, and use a hammer and screw driver to fold it in and out.

Would be hard to just hammer then out. Luckily I have a press to put the new ones in.

you really need to put the w/b in a vice if you are going to hammer them, they do take some doing. Tagys method works but its a bit of a fecker, i did the rear beam bushes that way a few years ago. prepare to get blisters though!

edit actually i didnt have a blowtorch, i used a 5mm drillbit and chain drilled the rubber and then hit sh!t out of the inner bushing to get that out, then chiselled the outer bushing. i was a slacker and did one a day

well, i have a car park, a hammer, a socket set and a few other bits and bobs. I have a hole saw but no working drill. No vice, No work bench, No chisel and no saw blade. I'm tempted to go to GSF and buy some 309 wishbones, but £130 is a tad harsh.

nothing its fine the handling was just poor, so decided to take the wishbones off, the hub bolts where pretty bent, the bushes didnt look to bad but thought i'd taken the wish bones off and had the bushes already so may as well change em. Now ive hit them with a hammer a bit they look alot more worse for wear! I'll try a couple of garages tomorrow if they are no use i can wait till Thursday no problem!

The last time I took a bush out (also the 2nd time I've taken a bush out!) I drilled all the way around the rubber. It only took 2min.

I also bought a new bush from Days in Swansea and they put it in for free.

Got the new bushes in!! Got the bus into town and bought a blow torch, hacksaw, chisel, emery cloth etc. Slowly perfected the technique.

Now whats all this about tightening up when the car is on the floor? my haynes says nothing about this!

Stu IIRC you have to tighten the bolts up under load rather than when its jacked up off its wheels..

put the car up on stands ( I know you have some) and jack the wheel up so the car almost comes off the stand, stops the bush twisting.

we used that technique, the car has lost its road wandering! feels 100x better than before!!!! Day well spent!

About removing the bushes, I actually use to hammer them out using a small sledgehammer.

But first you have to do some preparation.

1. Find a suitable socket that's just about the same diameter as the bush, but it need to be a little bit smaller so it can go through the hole in he wishbone without any resistance.

2. Take som threaded rod, M8 or M10 works fine, nuts on each side and tigthen up so the sockets sits tight in place onto the end of the bush.

3. Start hammering and it usually comes out without too much hassle.

I usually press them in using threaded rod and nuts too, not hard and easy to do if you don't have access to a press.

i used a chisel to bash in the side of sleeve so the socket had something to sit on, then hammered the socket through. then used a couple of sockets and a threaded rod like you said. worked pretty well.
