Still Suffering Cutting Out / Fuelling Issue

Recommended Posts

mainline

Just taken my 1.6 GTi for its first run since I had the alarm and immobiliser removed. Previously the car had been myseriously cutting out seemingly randomly. Symptoms are that the engine just 'dies' at speed and the car grumbles to a halt. Occassionally the car will catch again if I quickly shift down as if sort of bump starting it. There are previous topics of mine in a bit more detail if you want to have a look.

Anyway, I drove for about thirty miles today of a mixture of spirited and normal driving, absolutely loved it <_< Then when I was following a van up a steep hill it cut out again, same symptoms, felt like it just wasn't fuelling at all. It cut out more time on the way home, but otherwise fine, temp fine, oil pressure okay, idling at 1000 rpm, no funny noises. I am mystified, but leaning toward an intermittent fuel pump problem?

So far I have changed:

New fuel filter

New fuel pump relay

New ignition amplifier

Replaced airflow meter

Removed immobiliser

Changing the AFM seemed to make a difference, as did removing the immobiliser, but nothing has completely cured the problem. Any ideas?

Sounds like the fuel pump under the back seat to me,I'd try one off another car if anyone you know would be willing?failing that a cheap one off ebay,if that doesnt work I'd get an auto electrican to look at it or possiby rolling roaded.

Sounds like mine was when the AFM crapped out. Where did you get the replacement AFM from? Is it known to be good from a reliable source?

Cheers for the replies. I checked the terminal connections today and they are nice and tight. Think I am going to have it tuned at some point because I adjusted the airflow myself, so maybe that will help? It is running quite sweetly and not smoking or idling too high, but obviously a man with some equipment will be able to shed some light.

The AFM was from ebay, I think it seems okay, but obviously they can be temperamental , so there is a chance that both could be giving me trouble.

I am definitely going to have a look at the fuel pump though. It used to occasionally stay on after I had switched the ignition off, but changing the relay seems to have stopped it doing that.

What a minefield eh?

Still, 30 miles of country roads today have totally given me the bug back and I am determined to sort it now.

I've got an AFM that I know works here for a 1600 if you want to come and borrow it.

Have you looked at the sensor on the Dizzy that basically tells the ECU at what point the engine is (Hall sensor)?
