...but how the hell do you remove the rear compensator?! It's rusted to buggery, and seems to be rivited to the chasis leg? Or is that just a mount for the compensator and it's fused together with rust?

That's the bracket Si. You need to undo the unions on each end then it comes out of the bracket. Get the plus-gas out. :)
