Uneven Tyre Wear

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

How quickly my MOT seemed to come round. Anniversary date seemed to slip further and further into the year as I'd had to do work to get it through previous the tests. I was very good this year and did my all round check well in advance and put it to my regular test station 1 week early! I was very relieved that it passed OK with an advisory on front brake houses only.

The guy at the test place has done my car for 10 years now and knows most of the wrinkles with it. He can (occasionaly) be really arsey and fail it on silly things, so I was well pleased this year.

While checking the car out prior to the MOT I discovered that the front N/S tyre was preferentially worn on the outside edge

(it wasn't that much - but It was noticeable). Even though I had passed the MOT, I began to think about this tyre wear problem. Initially I thought it must be alignment of some sort - and later found out (after a little research) that it was caused by excessive (positive) camber on that side. The O/S tyre is OK.

Haynes says the steering geometry is Factory set and can't be changed - so what is causing this camber problem?

I could only think a) the lower arm or b)hub bearing.

Trouble is, if it was a lower arm and it was that bad how come it passed muster (MOT), 2 years ago he failed me on the O/S arm - so I had that done.

Does anyone have any views or advice on this matter.

regards

Dave.

slow down on r/h corners and roundabouts

check tyre pressures, worn bushes and balljoints tend to cause issues on the inner edge of the tyre rather than outer, so only hard driving or a bent component can cause outside wear.

Hi,

I've just been out and checked the lower arm and ball joint. All OK - I would have been surprised I must admit as I rebuilt/refurbed the front suspension 2 years ago. So are you telling me I've got to slow down!

Bugger it I'd rather have to buy a pair of tyres every now and again.

As a little aside I was in Thresco's car park last Friday. Got to the entrance - no trolleys as usual. Set off back to the trolley park near where I'd parked, Whilst there a bloke pulls into the slot next to my car and gets out. He then started looking the car over (I,m watching from about 20 feet away). Finally I yells out "Oi, what yer doing?"."Sorry Mate - is this yours?" he replies and then a long conversation about the car and how there aren't many left and how good it was to see it was being kept going - I did nearly have a go about "kept going" but given my advanced years I thought discression was the better part of valour. - nuff said.

It did make the old chest swell with a modicum of pride though.

Thanks for your input

regards

Dave.

Hi Billy,

you read my mind as that was exactly what I did yesterday (it was a bit hot though). I think I'll probably get another 12 months out of those Toyos with a bit of luck

cheers mate

Dave
