309 Rear Drums On 1.6 Gti Beam

Recommended Posts

I have searched on this topic but had no joy....

I've got a 1.6 GTI beam almost ready to go on the STDT. For ease and simplicity it'll be a case of swapping the whole thing over in one go.

Mine has currently the base model drum set-up, and as it stands won't fit the 1.6 beam, due to the backplates I believe.

My question is; Will the 309 drum set-up fit onto the 1.6 GTI beam?

Will I have to re-flare the brake lines too?

Just swap the backplates and use your existing setup? It's only four bolts and the complete backplate with shoes, cylinder etc comes away complete.

the shoes and drums are the main thing that's different from base model to gti (205) they are wider at 40mm over 30mm, as well as the backplate being different as it has a different brand of wheel cylinder used (Bendix using a round hole, Girling being oval)

BUT, I thought the STDT used the 1.6 gti rear brakes?

the Servicebox listing for the parts certainly suggests so...

Drum - 4247 30

180X40 - CARBURETTOR AND TU24 - INJECTION - DIESEL AND TURBO AND WITH ABS BRAKES - DIESEL AND VAN

To answer your question though, as long as you use the whole set of parts, i.e backplate shoe and drum, the 309 setup will work, it may even be the same as the 1.6 gti depending on the spec of the car they come from.

if you do have a base model brake setup, don't forget that the brake pressure limiters are integral to the rear cylinders unlike the gti system.

Even better then. I only just had an MOT on Friday and my braking effort was 50 Kg/? on both sides, which is what I think it should be doing, so I'm more than happy to keep my drums on.

So does does the 309 backplate fit then?

Sorry, just seen your WP. I'm at a bit of a loss now then, so I can just remove the brakes, drop the beam, then refit the same brakes?

Yes, you don't even have to disconnect the brake lines thus no rebleeding the brakes afterwards

Undo the 32mm hub nut, remove the drum, undo the four 6mm allen head bolts, and remove the complete backplate/shoe/cylinder assembly.

Refit is the reverse of removal

Thanks Anthony and Mei for putting my mind at ease. Wonder how I manage to make these things seem more complicated than they often are?

I suggested to Jimi to get some new back plates is to speed the job up for his beam swap.

The reason is because I've never had a set of the backplate allen head mounting bolts come undone without at least one rounding thus needing a socket hammering over the head to get it out & thought this would be easier (not forgetting the wheel bearing often coming apart & leaving the inner race on the stub axle).

I was going to make up some new barke lines when Jimi brought the near complete beam over for fitting or have them ready to fit when he did.

I can't remember what rear brakes my STDT had, an easy way to check just by looking at the back of the drum at the size of the brake union going into the cylinder. 13mm is Girling with built in compensator & 10mm is Bendix. 1.6 GTI or not they were 40mm wide shoes though.

Graham.

I just bought some cylinders from peugeot and found the brake union size different from whats on there at the moment.

After reading what Graham & Welshpug said, I 'm now worried that the beam I had from the scrap yard which they claimed to be a 1.6GTI beam is a beam from a lesser model, it has 12mm brake union on back of the cylinders.

The new cylinders from peugeot have 10mm brake union fittings. and both are round not oval at the rear.Hmmm

Can anyone confirm which type have the round bit sticking through the back plate please?
