Water Leak

Recommended Posts

Guest Crusty Pug

I have a water leak coming from a gap between the block and something bolted to the side of the engine, I'm not particularly technically minded but am thinking it might be the water pump (see image). Is this the correct general area for the water pump and if so where might be a good place to find a cheap used one? There is a faint wine which I'm thinking might be the water pump too.

Cheers in anticipation of your help.

Yes, water pump seems likely. It is the correct position.

But

DONT use a 2nd hand one, buy a new one from Pug or a Motor Factors.

Also, while you are at it, swap your belt and tensioners.

Great, think I've just found one for £20. Bonus! Thanks very much for your swift response, it's just what wanted to hear :) It looks like a quick job, haven't missed anything have I?

the pump is 5 bolts iirc, I sometimes use a bit of sealant as well as the gasket to be sure!

The whine is most likely to be the belt being over tensioned, but a new belt and tensioner will sort that.

to get to the water pump the cambelt must be removed and generally its not considered a good idea to reuse old cambelts, whilst at it , it may be worth changing the tensioner. So all in all its an ideal time to replace the waterpump, cambelt and tensioner. Its not really a completely simple job if you are not mechanically minded, do a few searches on cambelt changes as im not really familar with mi16 engines, after doing that see if you feel up to it :)

Yep cambelt is a big job, but worth the effort, if you have a haynes manual, read through the section on it, if you still fancy doing it, go for it! it will take a couple of days first time round, but only 3-4 hours second time as you will know what to do. Prior to the cam belt i'd only done a couple of brake pad changes.

Wrote a guide on it, it should be about somewhere.
