266mm Calipers

Recommended Posts

I'm looking to upgrade the brakes on my XT so i've been looking at 266mm ones but i've heard there are a few different types of calipers so i was wondering is there any one that would have a significant benifit over the others. I'm watching these on egay, are they any good?

Thanks guys. Mark

I believe the 57mm piston ones from 307s are the better ones. (iirc!)

I would avoid the 405 266mm calipers and the early 306 s16/xsi calipers. They are with much smaller pads.

The newer calipers, found on partners, berlingos, 306 XSI after 96 have larger cooling fins and larger pads.

Here is a pic of the newer calipesr which I am very satisfied with:

ran them for seven laps on a local track and even though the pads were normal road pads (TEXTArR) and with standard discs, I never had problems braking (after the race I found that the pads have turned white and the discs were blue..)

They do, but from memory uprated pads are easily available and comparitively cheap compared to some of the other 266mm options

If you need some, I do have a set of 266mm calipers from a late 306 XSi 1.8 16v sat in the garage surplus to requirements.

206/307 266s are really good, ran them on my 106 for years.

Ok i bought those calipers from Anthony but i've got a few questions (i had a mind blank when i was at his place and forgot to ask him)

1. Can i get a set of caliper bolts from Peugeot?

2. What sort of track pads are available for them?

3. Will the standard master cylinder be fine for them (they're a 54mm piston)

Thanks in advance. Mark

I probably have a set of bolts for them if needed Mark - they're just the same as 1.9 and other Girling/Lucas bolts, so easily available.

Standard GTi (20.6mm) MC will be fine, but there will be slightly more pedal travel than currently. 22mm MC would probably be perfect I'd imagine if you can find a suitable one.

Not sure about the pad choice for them, as I never looked into it that far - almost certainly be able to get the usual candidates like EBC Greenstuff, Mintex 1144 and Ferodo DS2500, but not sure about anything more hardcore than that. Worth having a browse through the online catalogs of the normal brake companies and seeing what you can find - I know there's a good choice for the earlier XSi calipers, but not sure about the later style that you've got.

I needed some caliper bolts so I just popped down the scrappy and raided a diesel 306 of some description, sorted.

Do 405 calipers bolt onto 205 hubs? I thought i tried one and it wasn't going to work, but i can't remember why now.

That would be convenient if they did

Well i had a hunt around for some pads today and all i could find were some Mintex 1144's but they were on a 6 week made to order list so i just bought some cheap and cheerful Ferrodo pads for the time being, and some budget discs.

I've got it all fitted now. I ended up using:

Ph2 306 XSI 1.8 16v Lucas Calipers

Brake Parts discs

Ferrodo Premier pads (for a Citroen Berlingo ;) )

405 1.8 Master Cylinder (22.2mm)

ATE Super Blue Racing DOT4 brake fluid

Goodridge Hoses

Willwood bias valve

I'm only using 3 ports on the MC and the pedal travel is just about perfect, exactly right for heel toe braking and it had loads of feel. I'm really happy with the way it has turned out and i can't wait to see what it's like on track. I'll get some decent pads in there (and maybe some of Rippthrough's lightweight discs  ) sometime next year but to be honest it pulls up really well as it is and i havent even fully bedded in the pads yet.
