Brake Renewal - Ooof

Recommended Posts

chocolate_o_brian

The 205 is gonna need new discs/pads all round soon, and I can get front/rear pads and rear discs nice and easy as they're straight swaps.

But the front brake set up is an Autofive one. 283mm and a different offset to the GTi-6 set up a mate has. I believe it comprises of bigger discs and caliper spacers bespoke to the discs offset.

Can get front pads for about £30 (Black Diamond Predator)

Can get rear discs for about £45 (pair of grooved jobbies from Ebay)

Can get rear pads for about £37 (again Black Diamond Predator)

But just rang Autofive up for a quote on the front discs....

£60+v.a.t. EACH :)^_^

So approx £150 for 2 grooved discs. Kin 'ell I thought, wouldn't it be cheaper to get different caliper spacers to fit a GTi-6 disc offset and buy straight out of the box GTi-6 discs.

Any help and advice appreciated, as this isn't gonna come cheap for someone unemployed :D

Can't use 6 discs with 205 calipers, the calipers will foul the wheel.

Might be able to fit spacers to create space.

Cheapest option is to go back to standard discs, or get a 6 setup.

Seems like it will be a '6' set up mate.

If I can get a set of GTi-6 grooved discs from Ebay and get the correct calipers second hand off here, it could save me an awful lot of ££

In comparison...

Autofive front discs - £150

GTi-6 calipers - £50ish?

GTi-6 discs off Ebay £60

GTi-6 Black Diamond pads - £40ish

Eek, get the whole lot for the price of 2 discs B)

So has anyone a pair of GTi-6 calipers they will sell me :D:D

Yes you can, they sell adaptors at places like Autofive that do just that...

How would the adaptors work, Baz? Like a wheel spacer?

I'm torn between just looking for a GTi-6 set up for the sake of hassle, as Chris above has.

I've got a set of those brackets, all they have to do is add some 10mm headbolt washers and some longer bolts to use a gti6 disc, mine came with said washers.

6 discs have an 8mm offset, Autofive discs have 11, we compared calipers and they are a different shape.

Costella sell a kit to use 6 discs and 1.9 calipers but need 16" rims to clear.

True but I have this set-up with 15" 1.9 alloys, just need to grind the edge off the calliper.

In response to the OP I would be tempted to remove the brackets and fit standard 1.9 discs, should be fine for most use.

Lol, sounds fun

So for a quick easy fix, the best option for me is some GTi-6 calipers then, and source discs/pads to fit accordingly.

I'd like to keep my wheels as they are, no spacers/brackets etc, and the above seems the most cost effective way of doing it.

Will put a wanted ad up me thinks!
