Quick Gti6 Brakes Question

Recommended Posts

Grim.Badger

I've just changed the pads on my new car, which has GTi6 brakes on. The pistons were really really hard to push back in, I had to get my breakers bar out to get enough leverage; is this normal? To be honest I might just refurb them anyway as it's hardly a difficult job but thought I would check anyway ;)

BTW I also have a 406 MC apparently.

Did you open the MC reservoir cover? You should have...

Otherwise they might need a clean. Just push the pistons out, clean any gunk inside the bore, check for any corrosion on the piston faces, fit back in. Ideally you would use some silicon grease on the seals, or some brake fluid instead.

And yes, you do have a 406 (aluminium) master cylinder in. I know because I fitted it myself...

BTW the GTI6 brakes would not work nicely otherwise, too much pedal travel with the 205 MC.

Cheers,

Daniel

Nothing to be concerned about IMO - most calipers seem to need a fair bit of effort to push the pistons back in in my experience

So long as there's plenty of stopping power and the car pulls up straight under medium-hard braking, then I'd not worry too much about it.
