Gti6 Brake Conversion

Recommended Posts

Retro Pug

I've spent the day with a mate swapping hubs, drive shafts and suspension (thanks to the GAZ group buy) in order to fit my GTI6 brakes.

Everything is now on the car and the brakes work OK but there is excessive pedal travel and they dont seem any better than the 1.6 GTI stoppers I removed....

I've fitted a 406 master cylinder (thanks Veero) but travel seems far longer than before.

Any ideas?

Cheers

John.

Someone will no doubt confirm...but the rod inside the servo may need adjusting.

As its still set up for the old MC.

Theres also a very indepth thread about how brakes work, and why fitting bigger brakes doesnt always mean you get better braking. Its the sticky in this section at the top.

Yeah, spend a good amount of time making sure there was no air in the system...

I did not know about the possible servo issue. I'm guessing now its that.

How much should I adjust it?

Im not sure, its only what ive read somewhere. Haynes manual has a measurement, but not sure it would work the same with a diff MC.

Just thought I'd update this.

While having my tracking done I mentioned the brake problem and my local garage had a go of adjusting the servo rod. It has improved but still needs a little more tinkering but I'm sure thats what it is now.

Thanks for advice again! :)
