Cti Carpet Colour - A Cunning Plan

Recommended Posts

stufarri

I had a thought while in Rymans the stationers today.

I bought some permanent red markers to restore the pink door felt trims on my Ph1 CTI. Looked superb, almost factory once finished.

I tried out a little of the colouring in on my orange/pink carpet with great results (only 4" square).

I know it may take 20 pens at 99p each and several days to do it, but is there any reason why this may not be goer?

I have not lost the plot honest but the carpet colour and the rarety of these things is beginning to get on my tits.

Would the pen lift after daily use, it might look good at first , but what would it be like after a months or two use.

I love the thinking though.

Good point, not sure. I did rub it (when it was wet) and I can't get the stuff off my fingers now - which is good, surely?

Could always bulkbuy the pens as I may need to refresh every month or park in the shade!

Should imagine they'll fade over time due to UV exposure, and I think when it does it'll be uneven where the pen marks have overlapped. (If you know what I mean??)

Nothing to lose though, eh?

Just ripp the carpet out completly and try the local jetwash - they´ll always come out great.

I plan to do his first but the original colour has been lost hence it is pink/orange.

May give the fabric dye on ebay a bash - it can't look any worse that it does now.

But you are aware, that there have been several different reds for the carpets over the years? From light red/orange to a stronger red. I am not the specialist about red carpets, because I don´t like them, but I know this is fact.

As far as I remember, the earlier CTIs had a very faint carpet to start with. But I try to find the correct information again.

It is nylon, not wool and didn't effect mine. Also temperature tends to make things shrink as opposed to just water. Did yours shrink when you did yours as I haven't heard of any that have shrunk over the years and I know a few people that have done this, particularly on CTI's as the carpets get filthy?

Never had a problem, then I did mine.

the grey is a Gentry carpet and the darker one is one from a 205 winner (75hp)

I think before and after are obvious.

and how could they shrink? They are plasticbacked.

You might hurt the webbing on an velour carpet, if the jetwash is too strong

Agreed.

You don't even need to use a jetwash, although the extra pressure must help shift the dirt. Not having a jetwash myself (or a garden/driveway to do it on), I've previously gone the more labour intensive way of beating the dirt out of the carpet whilst hung vertically, followed by vacuuming, followed by a good soaking and then scrubbing with a stiff brush and washing powder and fabric softner (plus any other household cleaning products that may be lying around at the time), followed by hosing off in the bath with the shower head, then left to dry, and then vacuumed again. Comes up niiiiiiiiice B)

No can do - I am a bit anal like that - it has to fit perfectly or it will bug the life out of me. GTI ones will never fit 100% and they are smaller in the footwells too.

Get the red felt tips in! (I coloured a 6" square last night and it looks spot on, surprisingly!

I'll take the carpet out this week and jetwash it first then decide what to do. Colouring with marker pens will take about a month.

Anyone know where you can get nylon dye from?

Decided that using felt pens is probably not the most exciting way to spend 2 full days.

Bought some spray paint from a fabric/haberdashery shop online, 2 cans £15 delivered. The bloke in the shop said that it will rub off a carpet, but with mats in, very little of the carpet will be touched anyhow. My view is it has got to be an improvement. If I have to refresh it every few month so what - and it is UV resistant too.

1st job is to take the carpet out and after that jetwash and let it dry.

The spraying will take a full day he reckons.

I'll keep you posted.

I've been jet washing my CTi carpet to get the glue off it, It's coming off very slowly without scrubbing with just the wide spray nozzle, the high pressure one started to lift the carpet from it's backing, so I've stopped using that, I think with a bit of scrubbing with a stiff brush I'll have mine looking like new.

I'd jet wash the carpet before dying it and decide what to do from there as the dye will work better if the carpet is clean anyway.

Try painting a carpet with textile paint. They come out great. Even painted a red carpet in black and it does not fade at all.

- first clean it (jetwash)

- take an old bath (don't use your own bath as it will be VERY hard to clean afterwards)

- put carpet in

- add hot water

- add textile colouring stuff (be sure to wear gloves!!!)

- stirr with a stick, the carpet needs to be fully submerged

- let it in for half an hour

- take out and rinse with lots of cold water until no colouring is coming out

- hang out to dry

Tadadada!! Nice black CTi carpet

Jetwashed the carpret on Wednesday and it came out looking far better after an hour or so - glad I'm not on a water meter!

Spent £15 on cherry red textile spray but it has come out a little patchy.

To be fair though it is red again rather than green/pink/orange.

Bought some £20 nylon dye that you scrub into the carpet without the need for soaking so I'll be busy this weekend.

I'll let you know how I get on.

Indeed yes Gerry.

Refurbed the centre of the wheels, getting new seats on Wednesday, polished it to within an inch of it's life and cleaned under the arches too - they are near mint now!

Just need to get the hood and then just basic tinkering over the coming months (tyres/cambelt etc)

I'll send you some pics when I have finished.

Hoping to have it all finished for £1000 all in and it's a keeper.
