TheLarneMan 4 Posted March 12, 2009 There is a small hole in my power steering reservoir just below the cap. There is no fluid leaking out of it but should I be concerned? I'm not sure when the hole appeared - it looks like a soldering iron (or something really hot) has touched the bottle and melted it. The car was a GTI 1.6 with PAS but has had an Mi16 conversion. Since the conversion, the steering has been heavier. It is definitely being assisted but not as much as before. Would this hole be contributing the the heavier feel? Thanks. Dave_McC 0 Posted March 13, 2009 Assuming the hole is well above the fluid level - so you're not losing any fluid - this shouldn't affect the level of assistance. I've just finished installing an Mi in my 1600 GTI - retaining the PAS set up - and the assistance is the same level as before. Was the original PAS pump reused (but fitted to the carrier on top of the gearbox) or was an Mi pump sourced? Could be a duff pump not making the same pressure? jplautomotive 0 Posted March 14, 2009 if using a 1.6 pump mounted above gearbox it will be turning half speed of what it was so will be less , may need a mi16 pump
Dave_McC 0 Posted March 15, 2009 Are the GTI and Mi pumps different? I know the pulley attached to the pump is a different size - but externally the pumps look identical. Dave
