Another Starter Problem For Mi16 - Weird "whistle" Noise

Recommended Posts

lee-bg

Hello guys,

Dont know if thats the right topic area, but i've been having problems with my Starters on my Mi16 since i bought the engine/car.

2 Starters down the drain and now i got pissed and gave a lot of $$ for a Peugeot 'exchange' unit Valeo from Peugeot dealership.

I put a direct ignition cable from the key to the starter itself so that i isolate cable problems. I also put a brand new "positive +" cable from the battery to starter/alternator. So far so good, but here comes the big problem :

When I start the car the starter started the engine just fine but immediately after engine rotated/start i hear this annoying whistling noise as if electro-motor is rotating and stopping. Like 'wwiuuuuuuu...". Sometimes i even hear it while the starter engages.

Its just for 1-2 sec after/when car starts, but its very very disturbing for me. Never heard such noise before and it doesnt seem right.

The starter looked very shiny and new Valeo unit. Exchange unit - so its supposed to be semi-new from factory. It is for XU10J4 (GTI-6) engine if that matters.

Have you had such strange problem ? Nobody can advice me from my local mechanic shops and i am afraid it may break again.

Just for info, my last starter solenoid failed in a terrible way so starter engaged the car while driven at high speed and didnt disengage so i drove like 500 meters with it engaged and stucking to flywheel , not on 'Gear' of course, until i could disconnect the whole battery.

I checked the flywheel but there was no big damage to the teeth, they are there, just a little 'shaved' on the edge. But apart from that the flywheel seems fine, and now new starter stars the car.

Thanks in advance for any advices you may have.

There is a possibilty its the ignition barrel it self.

If that is the case its probably an internal breakdown of the switching mechanism on the back. Luckily its really cheap (£10).

Can't think of a way of testing it TBH without long checks with a multimeter. Best bet would be to swap it with another from a donor if you can get hold of one.

Hope that helps

To tell you the truth i havent thought of the ignition barrel because noise comes from "starter".......but since I have another car with same barrel so i guess its test time tomorrow.

Thank you for advice !

Well the ignition barrel is the supply feed to the starter so if the switches on the back are sticking it will keep the starter engaged.

I think if you have ruled everything else out like you said that its got to be that!

Good luck and let us know

Yes but basically starter is not sticking. May be i didnt explained it right, sorry English is not my native language.

Starter works when i turn the key and stops when i stop the key, but there is weird 'wwiuuuuuu' noise when car starts, different noise apart from the regular noise. Its noise like when a propeller is loosing its rotation speed :)

Ignition swtich/key seems fine. Tested with another one and works same.

I loosened the bolts attaching starter to gearbox just a bit and it seem to have made some difference, less whistling/whinning. Any ideas ?

May be because its brand new starter it needs some time adjusting itself bendix to flywheel or .....i got no clue.

If any other advices i will be very thankful.

No, starters don't need any "adjusting time". I'm suprised that didn't cure it TBH

What g/box is fitted and what starter? I'm wondering if one of them is the wrong aplication. If everything has been eliminated it leaves you only with the flywheel, starter and g/box/mounting point.

Sounds silly but its not a worn/dry release bearing?

Gearbox is standard BE3, Mi16 flywheel, All is default application. Starter is the new slim Valeo one - from 306/Citroen 2.0i 16V

Looked again today and teeth of flywheel seem normally used.

They are not perfect, but i dont know how much depth they should be ...to be able to compare if mine are ok.

Dry release bearing? Is that something on the starter ?

Its new refurbished Valeo but it may have been in storage for 2-3 years.

Should i put some small drop of oil on the 'axis' on which the bendix ejects and returns ?

If by release bearing you mean the one on the cluthc, it was a brand new Valeo one installed before ~ 10.000 miles. I can try to start car with 'clutch' pressed...

I found the skinny starter from the turbo diesel would not engage with my MI16 flywheel. When checking a normal fat starter, it had more teeth and worked perfectly. Are you sure you have the correct part?
