Peugeot 206 - Front End Clunking While Turning

Recommended Posts

Mac210882

Hey guys

I've got an annoying problem on my GF's 206 XSi. There is quite a noticable clunk from the front end when you hit an uneven surface whist turning. It's more pronounced when turning into right hand junctions and the clunk seems to come from the front left. It doesn't seemto happen whilst the wheels are pointing straight, only when there is some steering lock applied.

I like getting involved in fixing my own cars if I can but diagnostics isn't my strong point, I don't really know what I'm looking for. Do these symptoms sound familiar?

Suggestions for what I should be looking for or testing for would be appreciated.

Cheers

Iain

Id go for drop links straight away, from personal experience on my own 206 and from friends with 206's.

Yep thats the ones. Never done them myself (me being lazy) but they shouldn't be too hard, worst bit is getting the old ones off.

Give them a check over first, ball joints on either end I think, see if they are loose.

As Ed mentioned, drop links are the first suspect, followed by the top mount bearings, although they are less likely, if you have a look and can't find it, PM me and I'll see if I can nip up and have a look for you.

Track control arms and engine mounts are other common points of failure.

Indeed the drop links are prone to going, replaced a few sets on my old (now mum's) 206GTi, and the GF's is clonking now so is looking like it needs a pair, aswell as top mounts as said, (suspension and engine) and check the intermediate driveshaft bearing too, they seem to wear more prematurely than other models unless i've just had bad luck!

I'm just looking on GSF now - lower suspension arms - are these also known as front control arms?

Cheers

Make sure its not the bloody beam either, seem to be failing more than 205 beams, plus not at all easy to repair.
