Quick Rack Kit

Recommended Posts

AdamP

Where's the best place to purchase a quick rack kit from (2.5 or 2.7 turn).

Heard that the Quaife ones aren't great because they don't come with the pinion bearing, which is an odd size and has to be destroyed during removal, but what other options are there?

I've got the Quaife one, so it was probably me you heard bitching about the pinion bearing. Try West Midlands Motorsport or AB Motorsport

I have the Quaife unit which works very well, the WMMS ones are ready made up though so its more of a plug and play option. Quick Racks are great on track, but its takes a while to adjust to on the road, it can also make the steering quite heavy on the road when parking etc so it can be hard work.

They are great for hairpin corners though because you dont have to sift the steering wheel!

It never gets used on the road, only really for hillclimbs where having a quick rack can make it much easier. I don't want the hassle of having an ex-power steering rack, would rather get the proper thing straight off.

GTI6boy, is it a flat or spline drive? I can't remember what mine is but if that one comes up for sale then let me know

I heard off a few people that a non power steering out of a base model 306 fits and has the same amount of turns as a quick rack.

Can any one rubbish this or is it true?

It doesn't really matter if its flat or spline as you can just change the lower column and they are so cheap to come by.

I used a 2.8 turn quickrack on the road and never thought it was heavy until i drove a car with power steering.

From what i've heard, standard is 3.8 turns, power steering is 3.2 turns and quick racks are generally 2.5/2.7 ish.

So power steering is quicker. However they have a small amount of play built into them so that is doesn't feel like there's a firm patch before the power steering reacts to your input. Some people don't mind it, some people find it irritating.

Matt - Both racks were bought brand new but 1 was a second hand un painted casing. This is the 1 that went on to my car and when i decided i did not want it i listed the 1 i sold you as the 1 on my car looks used. This is the 1 just about to go on my mates car.

If you got any problems with it, it is still under warranty.

Base model 306's have a very slow rack - 3.8 turns lock to lock.

The power steering racks are about 3.2 turns.

The Xsara VTS PAS rack I had fitted is a nice 2.4 turns.

No idea, mine's on my 306, but I've 3 spare racks here I can measure if you like.

I've got a 2.0 quaife rack now, which is going to a bit heavy in the 306 I think, the 2.4 was weetabix time!

I'll be bolting up my Xsara rack in the next couple of weeks. I think its a couple of minutes with a grinder to make it fit.

I'm just going to go for a quaife quick rack kit from AB motorsport. Andy said he'll show me how to save the pinion bearing as well so all should be good!
