Heat Sheild Material

Recommended Posts

StuF215

I have to make up a number of heat shields for protection in the engine bay and underneath the car. I was going to purchase 1mm (max) thick alloy but I have a large sheet of 0.5mm thick galvanised steel already in my possesion...

Does this steel have good use as a heat shield or will it not retain the heat enough?

Thanks in advance

Stu

Most manufacturers use ali.

Its easy to bend / shape and is around 4 times more thermally efficient than steel i think. Its also lighter.

Thats not to say you cant use what you have. But you would be better off with ali i think.

Stainless steel is by far the best metal for heat shielding, because it's a poor conductor of heat (and electricity). Although aluminium is light, it's one of the best conductors of heat (and electricity).
