Mi16x4 Q's

Hi There!

 

I have just bought a Mi16x4 that's in pretty spiffy condition. I intend to keep it for a long time and bring it back to mint condition... Eventually it will get a bit more poke, but I'm not sure I want to change its appearance (even of the engine) from stock, so it may only be a little.

 

A few things I wanted to check on though, any advice is greatly appreciated:

-There is quite a lot of whine from the transmission at certain speeds.

-It has a bit of backlash in the transmission, so there's a knocking noise (that you can only hear outside the car) when changing gears.

 

I figure the epicyclic diff's are straight cut gears so diff whine might be normal, and I know some 4wd systems have a bit of play in them as a design..

 

Can any 4bie owners let me know if they get these noises? I'd rather catch any mechanical issues earlier.

I don't remember a massive whine on either of mine, and the rear diff is a Torsen.

i cant add any advice as ive never drove mine :( or any other mi4bie :( bought is as a damaged motor waiting to be restored :lol:

Hey Doug,

 

Mine had a lot of whine as well, but today I replaced the flex disc and the main shaft bearing.

 

I think the bearing (which is fixed to the underside of the car just under the handbrake) was shot because after the swap, 95% of what I thought was from the tranny, disappeared!! The last 5% could be expected from a car that´s done 270.000km! :P

 

Parts can be bought online from ATD Performance - DON'T forget the 5 sided hex key! I though it was fitted with torx bolts, so replacing the flex disc was a bitch - but did get replaced after a lot of headscratching. :unsure:

 

About the play in the driveline - something I also have a little bit of, and haven't quite figured out yet. Have been looking af the mechanical side of the transfercase and the rear diff. Both look as if there is some possibility for adjustment, but again I'm not 100% sure.

 

You asked if the "diff" is a straght cut cog/wheel - it isn't. The standard "BE3" diff has been swaped out with a thru and thru drive. Have a look at http://www.atdperformance.com/topic1/page6-en.html . The shaft on the right goes out the right side of the diff directly into the transfercase. And as you can see, it's hollow. Against the norm, the left propshaft is the longest of the two at the front, and passes thru the diff and meets the right propshaft inside the transfercase.

 

About mechanical issues, I can only say that they, appart from the drivelinere, not much different from non X4 mi16s. The only thing is sourcing parts. :wacko:

Awesome, thanks for the reply! I have been a bit slack with the car, but she's had all the fluids done, 4 new tyres, a whole lot of rust painted up with hammerite (good enough until she gets taken back to bare metal), new prop shaft bearing and bearing housing... I found the whine was mostly the rear diff, and the same for backlash. The oil that was in the rear diff was smashed to bits, black and thin and only about 1l of it.. Put some new stuff in there and it's much much quieter. I gather the torsen diffs have a certain amount of backlash designed in, but should be adjusted so mine is probably a bit out..

 

Of course I took her for a drive and did a wheel bearing (I think). I hope it's a wheel bearing, as opposed to something more sinister... It's not seized but making a bit of noise..
