[car_restoration] Alien Vs. 205

a 200mm servo is about 10mm away from the scuttle panel so I doubt a 255mm one will fit.

Ain't the standard 205 GTi one 225mm?

There are space issues in right hand drive 205s so even GTIs only got a base model 200mm servo.

Ok. it seemed to be about 10-15mm clearance on my track car (which I guess has a 225mm item) when I looked this morning.

Meaning it might be possible or just not...

Will just have to try it I guess. 15mm is all that's needed.

Got help from a mate yesterday and cleaned out a lot of crap and large objects from the spray booth.

Also turned the 205 back down the right way. It's so dirty after 9 years standing more or less untouched. So I better start by cleaning it.

Yes they seem to suffer in the same common places.

I'm a bit surprised though, that this low miler 91 model seem to have more rust in general than my trackday car that is a 84 model.

Some small update.

Managed to prep and paint the subframe today, re-did the brake orginal 225mm brake amplifier as the 250mm one did not fit.

Also continued the cleaning today, pressure washing with white sprite inside arches etc.

Painted the 3 wheel arches that didn't have paint this evening.

Tomorrow I'll put on the rear beam and see if I can move it to the paint booth.

Have moved it to the spray booth now. Still some rust removal to be performed before I can spray it in the white paint/primer.

IMG_20160328_204751_zpslnkgwlaq.jpg

Also got the doors, bonnet and boot from storage now.

Is it possible to remove the rear windscreen rubber and re-use it? I.e. take it off prior to cutting out the screen?

I removed this from the bonnet, I guess it does not really do any sound-deadening at all, so might not be worthwhile to put it back?

yes, the trim should come out easily enough, take care not to stretch it, sometimes they can be a bit stuck to the sealant if there was excess squeezed out the sides.

if the screen is good and no corrosion under it I'd leave it in and mask it.

Agree if I can get the trim out and no sign of corrosion underneath, I'll mask the screen.

However wonder if I'll be able to get the trim on again after painting. A lot of lubrication is probably needed.

Did not manage to save the rear screen rubber... sat more or less totally stuck :)

I've been busy with some cleaning up and sand blasting lately though.

Inside of bonnet, quite some rust under the sealant just at the very front, and also around most of the holes in the inner skin.

Chassileg

IMG_20160411_130117_zps0rakoekw.jpg

Inside of the threaded rods for fuel tank support was blasted and given an oil treatment. More or less all the normal places of this car has some rust, even though it's a low miler and late model 1991.

Also found the dash at storage, very dirty.

IMG_20160412_085239_zpsgl3buq38.jpg

Something looks off here, but shall it be loose with the posibility just to clip it back in? I haven't tried much yet, thought I would ask before I start to apply and force to break it more than it already is :)

IMG_20160412_085253_zpsapx4hyru.jpg

Also did some more disassembly of the boot.

IMG_20160412_085533_zps6apc4i49.jpg

And in the end, after a lot of sweat, the windscreen came out. I hate it so much, cutting out glued windscreens. Done it too often lately.

Also recieved the new springs and dampers from KAM Racing yesterday, most parts are getting here... not sure if I miss anything apart from paint now.

Some more slightly progress, painted the gear rods and the front ARB.

Also did some more sanding on the car in general, and cut out part of the cracked seam sealer above the rear side windows. Painted it with a brush now just to protect from corrosion. Adding new seam sealer next time probably.

B-pillar to sill is starting to let go of the paint, however the zink layer still seem to be more or less present, so no real corrosion yet. Need to cut out the old seam between sill and rear panel next time and get a better view of this area.

Paint was indeed getting loose at bottom of B-pillars. Scraped it a bit and cleaned up the area.

IMG_20160419_120345_zpsinbp3jer.jpg

Painted it locally before adding seam sealer.

IMG_20160419_122854_zpslqfsgisr.jpg

Also painted the rear of the bonnet in white as primer

IMG_20160419_122837_zpsxqk3d4bj.jpg

And the inside of the new left wing

Had a go yesterday too, and had to cut out more of the sealant between sill and rear wing.

Also sanded some more filler, and painted some brackets. Painted on top of the filler in the antenna area on the roof to get an inditation of how the dent is coming along.

Still need to add some more filler one place, and see if I can find the holes for the antenna again.

Managed to get my parents babysit this weekend.

Had quite a bit of unnoticeable progress, sanding, sand-blasting, seam sealing etc. and starting to clean out of the spray both again, in addition to cleaning the shell itself.

Managed to spray the front wings and the bare-metal areas on the shell before I had to leave today.

More filler added to the door steps and another layer of paint shot..

Also emptied the rest of the paint on the firewall. Next time I'll paint the rest of the inside.

Sprayed the rest of the inside, and was going to spray all remaining on the outside too, however did run short on hardener, so have to get some more before I can finish it all off.

Now finished spraying primer / filler. Just need to matt it down a bit before spraying color.

Not 100% decided on color yet, but starting to fall down on Steel Grey. That is the darkest tone of grey delivered on 205's isn't it?

Looks good!!

But wouldn't graphite grey be darker than steel grey?

As Tim said - Graphite Grey is much darker and looks almost black in the shade, whereas Steel Grey is still very obviously grey.

Steel Grey does look lovely though and would be a good choice (IMO)

Ok, I might just order some and see how ut turns out. If I find it too light it's not worse than spraying a darker one on top. But as you say, I imagine steel grey would be nice.
