23mm 406 non-ABS would be my choice - you will need a blanking plug to convert it to 3 outlet if you're retaining the 1.6 brake pipe setup (which is what I usually do on 1.6-1.9 rear brake conversions)

I discussed this with PeterT (here down in Oz), and for standard brakes, be that disks or drums on the rear, he recommends a simple swap for a 306 (non GTI6) MC.

For any larger brake set-ups, either use a 406 MC (NOT A 405 as it won't work properly) or an after market/performance set-up.

i was also planning on running braided hosing straight from the master cylinder to calipers, if that makes any difference

Propably because its mounted vertical in the 405, and the oilcup would be in the wrong way if you mount the cylinder horizontal.

I use a 405 master cylinder (mi16, ABS, 22.2mm diameter, 4 port) and it works fine - and a good match to 307 calipers. I found the 406 master cylinder (23.6mm) too large
