Front door speakers

I'm looking for a set of component speakers to fit in the front doors, I've got a set of Infinity in another 205 which are great, but it seems not made any more.

 

There are a wide range of options out there from around £50 to over £300, can anyone shed any light on which are a decent choice spending up to say £100? I don't really think I need a set of £300 speakers in a 205.

Whoops....I've gone a bit wrong then. I have Focal es165kx2 component speakers. But they do sound sublime. But cheaper componet Focal speakers are worth a shout. I cut my doors to fit 6.5", but standard 5.25" setup something like this might be worth a look: Focal Access 130AS 100w 13cm 2-Way Component Speakers.

I don't think you'll go wrong with those Tom if it's just a 'standard' head unit.

 

Assume you need component as opposed to coaxial?  Not sure what you've got upstream, or if you plan on running a small amp (and without stretching to SPRs) then I'd also consider the SPGs which are a touch over budget:

There is no right or wrong answer, although I'm certain this is more a reflection on me being too tight than anything else! I had seen the Focal stuff and look really good, I was hoping to find some sort of group speaker test/review somewhere to help make the choice, but can't seem to find anything, I'm sure Max Power used to do stuff like this back in the day!

Thanks, I like the sound you get from the tweeter mounted higher and more directed at you, that you can achieve with the component speakers, the other consideration is that often the co-ax type place the tweeter further out than the mounting face of the speaker, which then means the standard Peugeot speaker grille either doesn't fit, or fits with a bulge in the middle where it is pressing on the speaker mounted tweeter.

 

Only a Sony head unit which claims 50w output, I don't want to go to the lengths of amps, but I do have a separate underseat sub woofer to fit which do fill the sound out nicely.

Speaker choice / sound is so subjective at the 'lower' end - you can find all manner of group reviews for pro speakers but doubt those guys are intereted in doing the same for the average Joe.

Good point on the grilles.  Are you using crossovers to split your existing tweeters off, if not you'll need a component set that includes them like the SPGs I linked above.  Not sure which of your cars this is going in, but if you like a decent sound then I'd recommend an amp - I've picked up cheap four channel Alpines in the past and the difference is remarkable; effortless, quality power and sound rather then overstretched loudness which just hurts your ears.  Slippery slope though!

So after much procrastination!

 

I settled on the Focals as mentioned above by Duroc.

 

The thing I found difficult was trying to figure out from different manufacturers, what the hierarchy in their various lineups was. With the various prices available it wasn’t as simple as more money equalled a superior product.

 

ANYWAY. They are on the way now, a decent price in the market of £108, and an eBay coupon for another £10 off got them into my skinflint budget

I’ll update once they are in the car.

I'm gonna be fitting a Blaukpunkt head unit soon so probably worthwhile upgrading the speakers at the same time.

Funnily enough just bought some speakers and a head unit for my 309 GTi, didn't want to spend a fortune so went for Kenwood KDC-BT960DAB Head unit, 5.25" JBL Stage 2 524 speakers for the front and JBL Stage 2 9634 6x9 to replace whats in the parcel shelf.

 

Been a long time since i played with ICE but i wanted a head unit with DAB+, blue tooth and a CD player (seem to be getting rarer). Also comes with some nice features like hands free phone calls, apple play, Alexa and  3 x 5v preouts in case of future upgrades. I always remembered JBL speakers having a nice sound back in the day and they don't break the bank so gave them a try too.

 

Anything will sound better than the current system that sounds like an ant singing via cup and string

Well finally got around to it. Pleased with the fitment and with a limited test they sound great. I have always liked tweeters to hear vocals etc more clearly. Next up I’ve got an underseat subwoofer to wire in, the head unit has a high pass filter to take the bass away from the full range speakers then so it allows them to do their thing and the sub fill in the bass.
