Hi all.

Was out driving my 89 1.6 gti phase 1.5 last Sunday. Car was going great.  Slowed in traffic and she died. Eventually restarted. Limped home. Hesitant acceleration etc. Died again while idling at home. Browsed forum for solutions.

Pump wasn't priming.

Ran 12v direct to pump as suggested,  she was purring away.

Located relay under dash.

Here lies problem.

My VIN is throwing up wrong relay part for my car, which seems to be a hodge podge of parts. Phase 1.5 mongrel.

Does anyone have part number for this 7 pin , 12v relay please?

All help really appreciated.

Found it. I think.

Had just posted this when I then saw ian010778 posted photos of wiring looms.

Saw his relay Durite 072342.

Out of stock ,but led me to Lucas FDB 506.

Fingers crossed that my factors can sort one for me now with this info.

Thanks Ian.

Stephen.

Update. More confused than ever, if that's possible...

Got new fuel pump relay this morning.  Lucas FDB506. A direct replacement for Cartier one that had been on car. Fitted relay. No power at pump. Car cranks but no start.

Fuse in box is good.

When I put multimeter on back of relay fitting I'm getting 12.37 volts between brown and white wires when key at ignition.

When key turns,  relay (new or old) doesn't click.

When I put 12 volts directly to pump it whirrs and car starts immediately.

Can anyone point me to a solution or am I better to go to Auto-electrician.

sounds like you may be losing spark intermittently, as that is what triggers the relay when cranking and running.

do you see any life from the rev counter when cranking and not firing?

Was not paying attention to rev counter at all.

Away from car til Monday. Will check then.

But when I put 12 volts direct to pump, by-passing relay, car starts and runs, revs perfectly.

That's what is frustrating me..

Thanks welshpug.

You need to check the wiring.

Do you have a 4 pin square coil or a round coil?

This is for a car with the relay on the dashboard and a square coil, rev counter is also using pin 1 on this coil:

And this is with a round coil and a relay on the engine compartment:

Thanks for the replies.

Rev counter does not seem to move on cranking.

It does move when 12 volts supplied direct to pump and car starts.

Thanks for wiring diagram SRDT.

Have booked her into an Auto-electrician next week.

I fear I will do more harm than good if I persist. Electrics aren't my strong suit.

Will update next week when she'll hopefully be up and running.
