To hone or not to hone.

Hi all.

I have a very simply question.

Im rebuilding a xu10 8v turbo engine, when I have lift the head i noticed that the cylinder seem in very good condition with the factory honing marks all around the cylinder walls.

So as Im going to change rings etc, im in doubt if honing will be a good practise given that the cylinders are in so apparently good shape, as my "hand" honing will be a poorer quality job than factory one for sure.

Thanks all!!

if you fit new rings then you should hone the bores, and really should get it done by a decent machine shop to make sure the finish and angle of the cross hatching is correct.

New rings on glazed bores won’t bed in.

You’re better off sticking with the old rings if you don’t want to hone the bores.
