Full Service History... + gentle refurb

Hey folks...

My 205 is just about to hit 66'000 miles, which looking at the log book is a service milestone. All the previous services have been done by a Peugeot garage...so should I carry this on by taking it to a Peugeot garage, or just to my local garage. I thought it perhaps looked better having the continuous Dealer history?  Looking at the Peugeot website im not really sure what it would include but im taking it that it would be your regular filter and oil changes etc...or what should it involve? Are there different services for this age of motor?

I was going to be getting the water pump and timing belt also changed...is there a preferred type, as with everything there is 101 types from cheap to expensive.

Im just looking forward to getting these jobs done before i start going over everything else thru the winter months. Anything else I should look at/replace over this time...the car doesnt do much miles year to year...and in good health otherwise.

Just away to look at the water temp housing connections as STOP light coming on with water temp light, but fan comes on and off and gauge stays roughly half way. This was just running up and down my drive as car has been off the road most of this year.

Thanks in advance

:D

Richard

Nobody working at a Peugeot dealer in 2020 will have any training or knowledge related to 205s.

Ideally you should take it to a specialist but they vary hugely in terms of knowledge and quality of work so make sure you research them first.

The STOP light is meant to come on with the water temp light AND the low oil pressure light so I suspect your low oil pressure light is not working. Does your low oil pressure light come on when your ignition is on but the engine is not running?

Your oil pressure does look quite low on the gauge, does the gauge go up when you rev it? And does the STOP light go off when you rev it too?

This , keep it away from a Peugeot dealer . The techs will probably try and plug it into a diagnostic computer or something- I've seen that happen.

Have you owned it a long time- do you know what work has been carried out previously?

If not its worth getting the Belt and water pump changed. Drain and refill the coolant to 50/50 mixture. Change the fuel filter/ oil filter. Not a lot really needs that much attention. everything else is standard checks - brakes, suspension , nothing particularly taxing. It can all be done by a decent local garage and will be a lot cheaper than dealer hourly rates.

Thanks guys...

Jackherer...

Ok looked at the car today...switched on the ignition and the oil pressure light comes on, the STOP and battery light, and the water temp light comes on. Start the motor and all lights go out.

I noticed it took a while for the oil pressure to move, and when it did only went to first white mark after the red mark. It also sometimes dropped off/cut out which made me think there must be a fault with the gauge. The gauge didnt really move when the car was revved up.

Would this problem be with the gauge behind the dash screen, or is it further down on the engine?  Maybe a pressure test would be the next step...!!

I also noticed 2 small water dribbles on the floor under the back of the engine...one from lhs of block, other in line with the dipstick. these were there when the car was sitting for 6-8 month not running...not sure if it would be perished hoses there...or a more worrying problem.  Water temp goes up to half like first pic, fan comes on and off and temp doesnt go any higher...the car is not on the road at the moment so is not getting the normal cooling from wind thru rad etc...

Thinking i will try and get a mechanic to give it a look over...since there could be a few reasons these things point too...but i appreciate knowing a bit about them first.

Pic below is the ignition on but not started. Then all lights go out ;-)

Thanks again

There are potentially 2 faults here.

1. Sounds like the oil pressure sender unit for the gauge is duff rather than the gauge itself .

2. The high temp and stop lights coming on suggest the high temp switch is duff. All 3 lights come on with the ignition but once the engine is running with oil pressure a diode in the instrument pack ensures the stop light will come on along with EITHER the oil pressure or temp light whichever is triggered.

All of these functions get to the dashboard from the engine bay via the infamous brown plug multiconnector above the gearbox. I would start there: if the connections in that plug are corroded or dirty it will throw up all sort of funnies with the instruments.

Did you check the oil level?

Once I faced with stop light and high temp light on same time when the oil cooler hose blown.

Plenty oil in it...all fluid up to their levels. I definitely think there is a problem with oil pressure sender, as it didnt move for at least a minute, and every now and then it would drop out then back up again. Ill look at getting a new sender.

My biggest problem is im a wheelchair user after a motocross accident...so cant just jack it up and look under/strip bits off to get in about. Might take a minute to get a hand with it.

Ill try and get the guy from the local garage who had 309s back in the day...at least I have points I can get him to look at...

Oil pressure sender

High temp switch and connections

Now talking about the brown plug...there is a brown plug that it not connected to anything sitting up beside air filter (should of taken a pic of it today) is this what Stewal spoke about in an earlier post...this should be connected to something.........Oh my head...!!!  the plot thickens

No, the small plug near the air filter is a redundant diagnostic socket.

The large brown multiplug for the engine sensors sits above the gearbox below all the ducting and pipework so is difficult to see.
