Carbs to Fuel Injection Conversion

Hi all

 

New to the group so apologies if i'm not posting in the right spot. I've recently bought a '91 1.9 GTI which is running twin 45 Jenvey carbs and an Emerald K6 ECU (also has a Zeemax kit!). Its been off the road for just over 2 years and as I live in Hong Kong, it now requires quite a strict govt MOT in order to re-register it. Despite having bolted on a cat, it is still failing the emissions test and as knowledge of these types of engines is pretty limited here, one option i'm considering is reverting it back to fuel injection. I've heard this could be a big job depending on what was removed to fit the carbs but nothing is impossible so am interested in knowing if anyone has experience of this. Its a project car and i'm willing to invest time and money but just need to pointed in the right direction, for example, is there somewhere that sells a complete kit including wiring loom, injectors etc. I've still got a modified 205xs in the UK which has been in storage since i left 18 years ago and still remember the driving experience despite everything that's come and gone in between so can't wait to get this GTI roadworthy! First of all, it's running throttle bodies, not carbs. Carburetors have floats, needles and jets to control the fuel, not a computer. ie your car has Jenvey throttle bodies, four injectors and an Emerald computer.

 

Provided it's an otherwise standard 1.9L GTi engine internally, if it has a cat and a lambda sensor, there is no reason why it can't be tuned to meet the emission standards of the year it was produced. Any tuner worth their salt should be able to do that for you.

 

However, if you're asking it to meet 2020 emissions standards, forget it. Even with the original ECU, manifold etc., that will never happen.

 

You need to know where the goal posts are and how high you need to kick.

Thanks both and my bad - ITBs and not carbs - spot on. Even the guys at the place i picked it up from reckons a decent tuner would be able to get it done but the issue is finding one here. One collective view from the mechanics I have spoken to have said that reverted to fuel injection it would be fine for the emissions - how big a job is that?  Have also learned today that it has a Quaife LSD which is a result.

Is already has fuel injection as stated above. Likely that adding closed loop lambda feedback to the emerald could do the trick to pass your test.

Another option could be to ask/pay Emerald to send you a map. I'm sure they'd have one for your spec.

RIght now am willing to add anything to get it through. If this were a 'usual' MOT would be no probs but because its been off the road 2 years it is heavily scrutinized as needs to be 're-registered' so goes through the same test as if it were being shipped in. So whatever I need to do (even if it kills the performance) i can undo for future tests. Thanks for the above suggestions.

Does anyone find it shocking that a "mechanic" thought it was a carb?

 

I think you need to find a new mechanic.

They even told me they were Webers! Having lived in Asia for 13 years nothing surprises me anymore. I've had more success self diagnosing issues with my cars via forums than I have using mechanics, the mentality here is simply to replace bits until the problem goes away.  I've reached out to a specialist classic car company i've used before so will have the Pug dropped there to see what they can do.  

 

Have written to Emerald as per the above advice (thanks guys) and see what they come back with.

Hi all - been a while since I posted on this thread - update being that the car has now passed the very strict HK government test and is now re-registered after nearly 3 years off the road. A whole host of things had been incorrectly done by the mob I bought it off (a well established classics dealer who have exotica like a 25th anniversary Countach, Tommy Kaira, 50's Corvette and so on). As well as quite a bit of work on suspension, the main issue with the tuning was 1) incorrect cable being used for the laptop to talk to the Emerald, 2) the Emerald had actually been wired in to the car incorrectly and 3), the cat they'd bolted on was at the rear of the exhaust near the back box, as opposed to the near the front as close to the engine as possible. Following many hours of tuning, the car passed first time! The ex owner has also told me it also has a piper cam fitted and a larger aftermarket radiator.

 

Now there are many cosmetic items to sort:

1) speedo and rev counter don't work (everything else does)

2) centre console is very lose and basically held on with tape

3) Has a Nardi gearknob which i want to replace with standard

4) air con was removed by previous owner - i want to reinstate so i can use in the HK summer

5) socks for the trumpets

 

Thanks all for your pointers above - will be posting further pics as the old girl takes shape. This makes it apparently 4 GTis here on the road!

1)   speedo is mechanical cable, if the dash has been apart it may not have been clipped in properly at either end.

 

2) as the emerald uses a wasted spark coil you need a converter to pick up both ignition pulses to drive the rev counter.

 

3) Peugeot museum do them

 

4) how much was removed?

 

5)  get a stepped backplate and a sausage filter from ITG,  JC50 is the backplate from memory.
