Engines with this intake manifold are the XU5J, XU9J1, XU5JA, XU9JA and XU9JAZ. All can be said to be "GTI" engines.

It's hard to tell with this blurred picture but this one could be a XU9J1 (105hp), XU5JA (115hp) or XU9JA (130hp).

You really need to check the tag plate on the block, this could also be a carb engine fitted with the GTI ancillaries.

look at the black and silver tag just past the fuel pressure regulator by the engine mounting bracket, its visible in the picture.

Thanks. Any idea on how to tidy up the pipework and wiring as you can see its all over the place. Anyone specialise in this? Also my afm is upside down I think to get the induction in could that be a hinderance or they ok like that?

It’s the three letters on the riveted plate that matter. Ends in B and is probably D6B which is a gti engine.

Maybe JSB is one of their designations?

This might help decipher you VIN

 
Chassis number: VF3XXXXXX00000000 (Where XXXXXX is the manufacturer code)

Pretty sure skip brown engine aka 'road-speed' would have a metal plate on slam panel.

 

My 309 gti did.

 

No real tell tale markings On engine from what I can remember
