Gearbox oil?

Recommended Posts

Not quite sure about this, I have a 1990 1.6gti with Be3 box so does this version share the engine oil with the gearbox or is it separate?

Only the very early 1.0, 1.1 and 1.4 'suitcase' engines shared engine and gearbox oil. All other models including all GTIs have separate gearbox oil.

Another question, does the gearbox share the oil with the final drive?

Thanks.    Just confused as they have separate drain plugs.

The one on the final drive is a drain plug but the large bolt on the side is a level plug, i.e. when oil drains from there the gearbox is full of oil.

and to make your life much easier, I would fill it through the breather on the top, with the level plug on the side out and a tray under it to catch any drips.

Yes, found all the plugs ok but what I drained out was red fluid,  looks like ATF.

Probably is, I had an XS years ago with a slight crunch through 2nd when cold and a mate advised to put ATF in, was an old trick aparantly. I did it and it worked a treat, did loads of miles like that aswell.

May not have been put in yours because of any faults, may have just been to make the gear change smoother or something.

I really would advise against anything but Total BV 75w80 or 75w oil.

ATF probably would have been better than an EP oil for sure

Some people used to mix certain percentage of ATF with the gear oil .. to reduce synchro crunching and ease of engage as i've heard .

Haven't tried myself , but remember my brother bought brand new Mazda 323 manual back in the early 90's , and despite it being specified for 75W-90 gear oil it came from the factory filled with the ATF !

... and that car made it to the moon and back few times without any issue (+ 400T Km's) .

Agreed , PSA gearboxes are proven best on 75W-80 Total oil .

Now that’s surprised me that ATF works well but I would of thought longevity of the box would be compromised.  Have some 75w/80 to fill the box with, So will find out if there are any underlying problems With the proper oil in.

Put some comma oil in my Citroen as gsf don't do the Total any more and I'm sure it made it worse! Try and find the Total one if you can.
