ATF in manual gearbox 1992 1.9 GTI

Hello all,

According to Haynes gearbox oil is 75W80. Am not fully sure as it was a long time ago but it could be that at the time it was filled with Dexron II ATF oil (same as used for power steering).

Would that be bad ?

Didn't drive that many miles last couple of years (garage queen :-) and gearbox seems to work fine.

I will of course change it asap if faulty. Do seem to remember that ATF was correct for it, but then again most online sources and Haynes say 75W80...

never heard anyone reccomend atf for a peugeot manual box, 75w80 or 75w oil is correct for them.

atf wont do the synchros much good.

It is probably better to have ATF in it though, compared to running without oil, or with water.

So as long as the gearbox seem to operate as it should, just drain and fill with proper gear oil.

Its an old wives tale. People used to put it in Escort RS turbo gearboxes. It isn't ideal. Drop it and put the proper Total 75w80 in.

Thanks will do. On 2nd thought I do think the correct stuff was in it as I remember checking the level and don't think it was red.

Will renew just to be sure. Sorry for vague post :-)
