1.6 rear brake seized: new parts fitted

Recommended Posts

miamigtimark

Hi all.

tried to search this first however didn’t see anything relevant:

The car has drums on the rear and I’ve just replaced the cylinder/ shoes with new items .

now I’m pretty sure I’ve put everything back together correctly but as I’ve run the car to check the rear drum foot brake it is jamming on .

To investigate I’ve had to get a bar behind to force off the drum.

Auto adjuster etc looks to be ok and handbrake work’s fine.

i can’t really see what I’ve done wrong , although the whole assembly sprung off before I could take it apart carefully .

The only questionable parts I re fitted is the retaining pins / springs and lock caps.

Anyone got any ideas?

hopefully pics attached which are old vs new.

did you back the adjuster off to suit the fresh shoes?

I’ve wound the knurled adjuster wheel in so there is little / no thread outside of the “tube”

If I went anymore the “tube “ and fork dropped out of the notches for the adjuster arm(right side of pic) and handbrake lever (left side of pic)

Don't forget to slacken the handbrake cables inside the car. Then pump the brake until the shoe is barely touching the drum / is adjusted enough. Then you can fine tune the handbrake with the cable nuts inside.

Ah I see. So the shoes could be off centre maybe.

Thing is when I tested the handbrake it was fine on / off.

The foot brake didn’t work until I started the car and pumped the footbrake at which point it locked solid after 15-18 pumps .

Ive bled a little fluid off also .

Just to add. Been reading about brake compensators.

The car is on axle stands at the rear and facing down an incline so probably at 20 -25 degrees off level.

would the compensator lock the rear footbrake on ?

no, itll restrict pressure to the rear and a slope wont be enough.

Thanks for clearing that up WP.

Ive ordered another cylinder off eBay just in case it’s a defective part.

Just to clarify is it just the cylinder that actions the foot brake and the other parts in yellow are all to do with the handbrake??

The handbrake only uses the right hand shoe that the cable connects to.  The auto adjuster assembly compensates for wear on both shoes.

you only need a new wheel cyliinder if there is a leak or one of the pistons seized.

Did you check the the handbrake cable was moving freely before you hooked it on to the shoe?

Thanks for the reply.

The handbrake is working fine .
I don’t think the pistons on the cylinder are backing off once the pressure in the footbrake is released.

whats making me think this is that the drum will not go back over the assembly.

Brake flexi is a good shout. Was something I had already thought about .

Might just order a couple up.

Never been replaced in my ownership (10years +) so probably long overdue.

Ill try this and report back.

Thanks.

Once the shoes are pumped out with the pedal and won’t retract, try opening the bleed nipple, see if the shoes then retract.

If they do you have isolated it to a hydraulic problem. Perhaps a brake hose as someone has mentioned, or could also be the master cyl.

Sorry but that isn’t right. The handbrake lever on the shoe also acts on the adjuster link and pushes the opposite side shoe out equally.

Yes that makes sense now. With the drum off the handbrake only moved one shoe that I could see. With the drum on it must push both shoes out.

Looking at your first photo, the wheel cylinder rubber dust cap is torn which would also let water into the piston cylinder and rust it up.

Thanks for the reply.  That’s the before picture as I was comparing the 2 pictures in case I had possibly got the rebuild part wrong.

Its a new cylinder in the second pic.
