Quick rack bearing help

Recommended Posts

Doseph

I’ve got a quick rack and pinion (flat drive) from Quaife but the new pinion is a different size to the OEM.

What have people done to get over this issue???

The OEM pinion has a 17mm shaft with a 6003 bearing on but the new pinion has a 19mm shaft which isn’t a standard bearing size......

ive looked on past threads but nobody seems to have solved this. I’ve called up quaife and they are useless.

Heeeelllppp

My mate had a bearing bore ground out to 19mm

It is s*it and Quaife are pathetic for not having addressed this issue.

If you bought the bits new from Quaife I'd send them back as not fit for purpose.

Bearing issues aside the Quaife is a strange product IMO. A quick rack in a 205 really requires power steering but their rack+pinion fits the unassisted rack.

If you add something along the lines of a Corsa electric column it will be usable but that requires a lot of modifications.

As above return it if you can then look for a Xsara VTS rack, it's a shame they are so rare though.

Breaking my forum silence as I'm helping with this job.

Quaife in my eyes should've been able to supply said bearing OR be able to tell us where to get such an item.

Spoox have a bearing for the spline type off the shelf. However they will not.tell us the measurements to.see if it will fit the flat type.

I would be almost certain this bearing is he same regardless of uj type. Can someone at least confirm this? It means we can get the 205 back on the road. This was meant to be simple. It is his daily driver. Being the legend he is.

Also just to add we have had measurements taken from an engineer. The bearing appears to be a standard 6003 that's had its centre enlarged. So in theory these bearings for spline or flat type should be the same.

We are also converting a NON GTi here. I was under the assumption that all the racks were essentially the same minus turns etc.

still having trouble with this....

There are a few options.

1)get the pinion turned down to 17mm to fit a standard bearing but it’s hardened steel so finding someone to do it is proving harder than I thought.

2)Grind down the inside of the bearing as mentioned before, but I can’t find anyone to do this work.

3) Or find another OEM pinion and steal the bearing off it and hope it’s reusable.

I think this would be the best option but I don’t want to buy a whole rack when I just need the bearing from it!

How is finding a bloody bearing such a problem!?

Have you spoken to companies like bearing boys and has a look in bearings online at what bearings are available in the dimensions you require?

Ok so for anyone doing this Quick Rack thing in the future the correct thing to do is get a 6003 rubber sealed bearing then get the internal diameter ground down on a lathe to 19mm to fit on the pinion, This should be a press fit so quite secure.

Good luck finding someone to grind the bearing down as this seems like a very specialist job these days! (why Peugeot in their infinite wisdom didnt just use a normal size bearing is boyond me)

What i ended up doing is getting another steering rack and pressing the old bearing off (this took about 1ton so it was seriously on there!) and then putting this on the quick rack. the re-used bearing seems to be in good condition and is nice and smooth.

Took the car for a drive and it is preeeeerrrrtty daaamnn heavy at slow speed, seems ok at speed though... i dont think i will regret it?

Yeah me Bash have spent hours on this, there are no standard bearings that fit. I've spoken to a few companies who where much more helpful than Quaife of Spoox and my mate did end up getting a message from someone that could do bearing grinding in the end but id already got a spare rack to dismantle by this time
