Sluggish starter on Mi16 engine when hot

Recommended Posts

Hi,

My starter motor has become very sluggish when the car is hot (starts fine when cooled down).  The car has a new battery and the battery terminals / cables / earths all look good.

Looks like I probably need a new starter motor.  Do I need one specific to the 1.9 Mi16 or they the same across all 405/205s?

Here's a couple of ebay possibles:

Cheers,

Thanks - you're the 2nd person to recommend a Bosch starter motor, so I've just ordered one!

I've just fixed the same problem in the summer. Starter span fine when the engine was cold but struggled to even turn the engine when it was warm.

Fitted a new 1.7kw Bosch starter and was just the same.  Car had new positive and earth leads already.

The fix was to add an extra earth lead to the body of the starter motor back to the battery. You'd have thought there would be enough metal contact where the starter/gbox bolts/gearbox flange all join up to keep the resistance low but obviously not good enough.

Something odd going on there, the starter motor bolts to the gearbox, which has the earth lead from the battery also bolted to it.
