snapped head bolt in my ally block

hi too all i have a snapped head bolt in my all block is there any easy way too remove it or is it a proffesional shop jobbie ?

its possible, depends how confident/competent you are and your access to tools/tooling.

 

the method that springs to mind is to bolt down a steel plate to the deck and use a mag drill to drill the remains out.

Is it flush or down the counterbore, or is there any sticking out?

 

Not trying to be s*itty but it’s really one of those jobs that if you are asking on a forum how to tackle it, then you are probably better getting someone else to sort it for you.

If you had the knowledge/experience/tackle to be able to sort it, you’d be in the garage getting on with it, not asking on here.

 

Once it is out be prepared to helicoil the block as often once they are seized they will rip half the old threads out when you do get it undone.

ryt  i have access to a pillar drill and local tool shop for specialist produts and the stud is snapped down inside the block. thanks for all the input though

the thing is the guy who owned the car before me tried too get it out himslf drilled 3 holes in the stud and inserted nails then tried to leaver it out with long bar i know thats not going too work just wanted too ask n see if i can be done without the aid of shop work thats all

That doesn't sound good , the single most important thing when drilling a broken bolt out is that the hole you drill is dead central in the steel bolt , as you are working out of sight several inches below the top of the block your drill will try to wander around all over the place - especially now that you have 3 holes in the top of it . I did my broken headbolt on a fair size pillar drill but i turned up a pilot sleeve that fitted down the counterbore hole tightly and guided my drill to hold it centrally . You might need to take it to a workshop where they can bolt down the block on a vertical mill and cut a central hole in the bolt with a slot drill .

That's incredible...... I mean, I've just never heard of anything quite like it. Can you photo it for us, I would love to see that one........ Wow !!!

 

Anyway, yeah, as the guy's are saying really. That's a shop job with a mill or as Mei says you could do it with a mag drill to.

Like Tom said above also, Re-thread every single bolt as a matter of course.

I've seen this tried DIY . Dont bother, take the engine out and get it done properly. The carnage that ensues otherwise is just not worth it.
