Converting Bilstein coilovers from 70mm to 2,25"

I have set of Bilstein coilovers that have 70mm/2,75" id springs on them and like to have shorter springs them. 

Can these be converted to take 2,25" id springs? 2,25" seem to be more available, cheaper and give more clearance for wider rims.

I find many spring seats and caps for bilsteins, but all intended for escorts. Will they fit 205 bodies?

As far as I know is that all Escort MKI & MKII "Bilsteins" are converted standard struts with a Bilstein insert. The adjustment ring is welded onto the strut body.

Might be worth checking out the GAZ catalog to find some dimensions of the insert and then make an educated guess if this is going to fly :). Contact Intrax may be an option as well.

I was talking to a mate about this on his KW coilovers recently.

 

Faulkner springs list their 2.25" springs as 58.5mm ID

 

So you need to measure the bodies on your dampers and see if they are small enough to get those springs over them with enough clearance so the springs don't rub the damper body. Then either buy spring pans to suit if they are out there, or have some made, or possibly have your existing ones modified.

the typical 'bilstein' tube is 50mm o.d taking a 40mm insert, I'm not sure if the thread is the same on the non bilstein branded ones or not.

 

plenty of meat on the 70mm spring pans to have them taken down a bit and still leave a shoulder to stop the end of the spring rubbing on the thread.

 

the rally boys will use something like this not a sleeve, the part linked to above is not an inverted insert.

The bodies are indeed 51mm ballpark, but need to check again. 

 

For the 13 quid each I don't think I'll go the route of modifying the 70mm seats. (Still have 2 sets of 70mm springs with them)

On https://www.motorsport-tools.com I think I can find all the stuff I need.

 

I'm looking for about 4cm lower than standard suspension; In doubt if I will order 7" 225lbs or 8" 225 lbs spring.... Anyone running these bilsteins at this height? Any risk of going coil bound on 7"?

The new style 205 Bilstien bodies measure 50.8 mm to fit the hub, the threaded section is slightly larger to give an m52 x 1.5 thread.

More in the sense that there can be 3" of standing water above the thread iso 1"?

The rubbing makes sense.
