Snapped studs at the rear - what to do?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

309 gti - the stud holding the brake pipe bracket at the rear, and the central stud which mounts the bracket for the tank heatshield, have both snapped off.

It looks like originally these were held in place between the two layers of metal rather than just spot welded on to the floor pan.

My current options look like a) spot weld new studs in place after grinding the remnants flush or b) drilling a hole through to the floor pan and putting a bolt in place.

I can't be the first to have this issue; what is the recommended fix?

Thanks!

That's how I've fixed it in the past, ideally with a spot of weld to hold it in place.

They are spot welded from the other side, the boss is thick enough to drill and tap, then screw a low Allen head screw in from the other side with a dab of loctite.

Need to go purchase a tap set for this tonight - any idea what size the stock stud is?
