Being at the point you are; making decisions about what direction to go in with respect to your car is good fun . However, a few words of caution. Explore all the options and avenues . The advice and information available on this forum is detailed, comprehensive and sage . But in the end you will have to decide what you want from and for your car. Once you go down the 16v route, “mission creep” becomes almost inevitable ( read my build thread  to see what I mean ) . A mild cam upgrade if you are doing an engine build makes good sense. Peter has a proven track record ( no pun intended here Peter ) on cam development . Much more than a mild cam upgrade however, and the o.e engine management system will not cope effectively , so upgrade number two begins. And so it goes on. 

We might chat about this next Monday if you can make it to ‘ the Highwayman ‘

I understand what you mean see below for an example ha-ha, also keep in mind this was 10 plus years ago so 205’s were cheaper, dont  hate me for ruining the standard model haha

What i want is a standard looking 205 with more poke keeping the original mi16 ecu and injection, im even considering putting the 1.6 wheels back on to be honest. I've done the big power and as much as i enjoyed the noise and poke the car just became too much to use on the roads (mission creep fail). i'll look forward to the meeting monday!

Mi16 Loom all sorted now. Everything labelled up other than these two wires (purple and brown)

I reckon they are the right colours for the reverse light switch wiring. Have you got a labelled plug anywhere else on the loom for the reverse light switch on the gearbox?

No numbers on them that I can see, they disappear into the loom. they come out of the ecu plug connection. They aren’t found lower down the loom from where the poke out.

 Just checked the loom for a reverse switch label and nothings there. its looks like your right Tom, reverse light switch

Yes, the Stage I inlet and chip is specifically designed for standard engines. Best ECU is the 3 row, as I can do a 7500 rev limit. However, the same maps are in either.

It’s Been a while so I thought I post a bit of an update;

 

Well what a ball ache, mi16 engine never turned up on three occasions now so I’m in a PayPal claim process to get my money back and get looking for another engine. 

 

Only real update is that I’ve put the 1.6 wheels back on, tyres are pretty rubbish so next buy (other than the engine) will be a set of decent tyres. I really liked my toyo r888 ones on my last 205 but I’m thinking this might be a bit extreme.

Right, bit of an update. 

 

Finally got got my money back on the mi16 from the robbing guy in Ireland (thank you papal) and I’ve found my self a gti6 lump that has come out of a 205. Comes with all the conversion parts already so that’s bonus, plus I heard it running. Plan is to do the belts, pump, fit silicone water hose kit, new air filter, consumables and just generally tart it up with a lick of paint. It’s arriving Monday, happy days

I finally got the gti6 engine on the stand. One thing I’ve noticed is my alternator position seems different to any reference ones I’ve seen? Can any shed some light one the position I have? Also how do I tell the difference between the vts and gti6 engines? Thanks

thats an s16 bracket setup, quite a bit lighter, looks like a diy steady bar, it should have a step in it, yours doesn't and its a bit wonky, could potentially break the lug on the alternator.

 

its using a timjng belt tensioner not the original s16 sliding type though

Thanks Welshpug, I'm looking to take off the power steering pump, is there a better way to mount the alternator? I've found on here that I should use a 6PK700 belt (easy enough to get hold of) but I think the alternator position is incorrect? Thanks

If you want my advice, leave the pump on and plumb the PAS up. Makes them much better to drive as the ratio on the PAS racks is shorter.

the alternator position is fine, you can make an adjuster to replace the upper strap/support using a 205 bolt and screw, add a slot to the bar and a return on the end.

 

though like Tom suggests I'd keep it.

Cheers Tom/welshpug, Ah that’s good to know the alternator is ok where it is. Only reason for looking to remove the PAS is that it plays up ever now and again. Sounds like darth Vader has taken over my steering when I’ve been out for a while. haha. I also didn’t mind my old 205 without the pas.... that was some time ago now though

 

I hear people running the pas racks with all the bits removed? Not sure if this is any good or not?

I don’t personally like pas racks without the power, to be honest I think every 205 is better with pas.

The issue with yours could be that the existing pump is old and tired.

The alternator strap would be better it were on the other side of the alternator, with an appropriate width spacer between strap and block, in order to keep the load perpendicular.

 

Having said that, get PAS anyway you can.

Noted, I'll look to replace the pump and get new lines made up. keep things tidy

good Idea! Thanks Peter. I have a couple of old spacers that will do just the job. 

 

Started to strip back the engine ready for paint and a general tidy up
