Laser green gti 6 project

Recommended Posts

chris 417 mi

So as id posted a few weeks ago here, it wasnt gong to be long before i was back into the 205 ownership club again :) i had missed having a 205 gti after ( mistakenly ) selling my L reg miami a few years ago.

With the birth of my daughter in September i had two weeks off work pretty much at home and in between parent duties began watching daytime tv,  car SOS ( Don't laugh :) ) reignited the spark for older cars id had and then the 205 GTI episode set the ball rolling.

Queue much Autotrader, ebay and facebook marketplace  searching to see what was available, although i already knew what i wanted.

When i was an apprentice in 2001 my first car was a E plate 1.6 GTI, a contractor came to site with a J reg 1.9 in laser green ( which i hadnt known existed at that time) and ever since id loved to have had one !

Searches had shown this was quite a rare colour to find now, the only one for sale ( at a reasonable amount) popped up in scotland ( And GTi6 converted which was a bonus) , a visit on the way back from buying parts for my Pulsar though proved to be an eye opener and i came home still 205 less.

A few days later another search a lot closer to home found this:

The shell was rotten at the back but it was complete and had the bonus of coming with a good condition shell !

A deal was done and a week later she was getting loaded on the back of Richies trailer

Luckily was a nice day for it !

Arriving at mine !

The beginning of a large game of car tetris with the neighbours cars my own van and richies trailer soon began :)

Back to collect the shell and get her loaded up ready for a slow drive home

Eventually both were at my house and ready to begin manoevouring them into place in my garage, harder than it looked on an incline with a stone driveway

59990275_10218889091768868_3218254286639

Eventually both were shoehorned in and the stripping of the Miami began :)

B Pillar rot

On with seat removal and cleaning, i plan on getting a black leather with green checks interior so the phase 1.5 half leathers will hopefully be sold along with the carpet and door cards :)

Rear Seats out and cleaned

Now for the fronts

60168100_10156793426505804_5612018274289

This was the worst of the lot, with the wear on the upper bolster and missing leather, a good dose of leather balm made them significantly better than when first removed.

60229417_10156795761315804_9000669143514

Next out came all the rear plastics, with a colour change on the cards and everything needing transferring over i needed the miami to be stripped pretty much bare !

I had a helper though :)

Almost done

Annnnnnnnddd out !

60540932_10156794228410804_1006651024632

Main floor wasn't in 'that' bad condition underneath the carpet and underlay

60085562_10156794229245804_1648085359289

And this is the current situation, awaiting time this week to strip the rest of the dash out along with door cards, the engine willl come out hopefully by the weekend if not next and will be up for sale too !

One the miami shell is stripped and gone i can transfer the subframe etc to the white shell and works to prep for painting in a few months begin!

That shell doesn't look to bad at all in the pics ,I don't think id be changing it and I heard some of the front subframe mounts on the inner wing are not on base model shells but I could be wrong plus the vin is stamped on the bulkhead on these which will be a problem if you ever decide to sell ! Also the rear arches follow a different shape on the gti to allow more wheel clearance .

But I do agree laser green is awesome and the only reason I bought mine but it was only sold for a year so is quite hard to find now , I did see that green one on ebay but it looked a right rot box although with a bit of work could have been a great car again.

There’s a fair bit of work in the back area and underneith too which I haven’t shown yet, the guy who will be doing all the metal work will be coming to see what’s instore for him in a week or so I’ll see what he says too.

to be honest though most who have seen it in the flesh have said “yeah that’s bad”

that one in Scotland needs more than is shown in the pics, pm me for more info if you like :)

Its always hard to tell from a few pics , I was really only interested in the one in Scotland if it was a runner as I've too many projects already and not enough time to get them sorted but thanks anyway, keep us updated with your project.

60576493_10156815930260804_5434399974777

Currently now she is sat with no dash in ( forgot to take further pics ), no doors or boor or bonnet on and minus the engine. Shouldnt take much more to remove the last bits of wiring , the bumpers

and headlining and finally beam and subframe !

Then ill have the task of removing the shell ! If anyone is interested it will be for sale for a small amount for parts ( As it non sunroof ) or any possible spare panels.

Will add more pics in a day or so :), then begins the task of sorting all the parts i have and removing anything not needed from the white shell.

With a long bank holiday weekend it was time to get this pushed on to a good point and thats exactly what happened ( With a good helping hand from Riche van GTi :D)

So beginning with removal of the back bumper, this required little tool work and more of a big push to snap the extremely rusty mounts, any thoughts of repairing this car shell were long one ( For me at least )

61221659_10156823143755804_4703331519488

Both sides had massive rot all that way along with the panels crumbling under pressure, a large pile of rust was rapidly forming !

61183694_10156823143880804_1317408796309

Rust rust and more rust !

61159800_10156823143925804_3798679847807

60988277_10156823143955804_4150800173179

Finally off and wiring removed

60825672_10156823144120804_6346980001467

Now to begin wiring removal !

61020376_10156823144225804_8231249576619

I did take many pictures of this but i wont bore you all :P the end result !

60882851_10156823144995804_1186370568174

Entire loom in a bin bag, ready for checking and refitting to the white shell

61171281_10156823145090804_7640003914795

All bare !

61232913_10156823145265804_2595680124040

Headlining removal 'tools' nothing else i had would remove the headlining in one go and unfortunatley the middle was slightly damaged, will have to repair if possible or source a good replacment.

60886062_10156823145410804_5372448086599

Next job was to push her out and get the rear beam and subframe off, the rear beam came off fairly easily, suframe took a little persuasion on one of the bolts with an angle grinder

61401824_2594127970619442_37571502327694

not much left now

me hard at work :D

happy to let someone take her if wanted but will have no V5C or any vin numbers etc as all will be needed for the new shell.

You can't swap VIN numbers between shells, it's illegal under all circumstances except for a fully documented brand new shell with a bill of sale.

Yes sorry for the confusion, I mean it won’t come with any paperwork etc, I have been in touch with the dvla though and discussed what I’m doing and they need all details off the current blue shell for reg transfer to the white. Many forms to fill in

Looks like its fairly localised rot to just that rear panel but yes that as bad a one as I've ever seen must have lived by the sea for a while. As said the dvla won't let you transfer id between used shells under any circumstances and trying to reason with them will be like banging your head against a brick wall . I know it happens but the dvla is never involved or gets to hear about it and if you send them any logbooks expect them to never come back ! (sorry)

I wouldn't worry I sent in 3 sorn applications recently and they managed to loose 2 of them lol ! so I phoned them in a second time and they still haven't updated ! Now I have to apply for a logbook I already have as the current one won't allow me to tax a vintage vehicle I have had for 19 years as our dvla In Northern Ireland  moved to Swansea in 2014 but anything on a sorn never moved over ... If it was originally uk reg its no bother and free but if it was Ni reg the computer says no and you have to get i verified by a club and pay 55 quid .

Anything involving the dvla is usually harder than it should be !

That doesn't seem fair, but on the other hand they forgot to test your cars emissions for 12 years so it's swings and roundabouts when it    comes to government bureaucracy

All our mot centers are government owned and run !!!! They didn't forget they decided not too bother lol and our current waiting list for an mot is currently about 8 weeks in certain areas I heard if emissions were tested on diesels it wold probably be 6 months ...

Yes she was a bit of catfish when you saw her in the flesh :D

work will grind to a snail pace now while I sort all the bits I need off the white shell removing and saving for small welding works and painting.

Hoping to begin putting her back together in green form around December / January time.

In the mean time I’ll be gathering all the bits I’ll need.
