Oil leak driving me crazy

Hi all.

 

Last weeks im having problems with an oil leak in my 205 turbo (xu10 from a xantia ct)

 

Its a hillclimb car and have a slight preparation, turbo, manifold, cam etc.

 

Engine was rebuilt by me 3 years ago and sitting in dry storage since now, when i have built the complete car, mapped and running.

 

At first there are absolutely no leaks, but with some use suddenly appeared an oil leak that is driving me crazy.

 

It drips only with load apparently, firstly only on wot or high rpm but now is leaking only revving it.

 

I can see it leaking from what seems the sump, in the zone that is between gearbox and sump, and i can see it what seems to be the “starting” leak point on one of the 3 allen bolts. It leaks badly, about a drip a minute.

 

Things tried so far:

 

-Sump gasket.

-Change from steel sump to alloy with new gasket.

-Ditch the new gasket and seal it with gasket paste (dont know how is said properly).

-New OE crankshaft seal (flywheel was fine and completely dry).

 

Im thinking on the “hockey” seals, but when these are knackered the flywheel should be dirty, isnt it?

I have had "hockey stick" seals leak, with no major contamination of the flywheel.

I would try them as You have done everything else.

I dont use sump gaskets, I use gasket sealent (paste).

 

"Gasket paste" is perfectly acceptable English

Ditto for me .Hockey stick seals . Oil dripped from the sump,bolts and yet the  flywheel remained dry

Rear seals for sure. Most people install them incorrectly. This is my way:

I baste them in ThreeBond 1211.

Fit the rear seal assembly in at 45 degrees and stand up vertical. The 1211 helps act as lubricant.

Leave 24 hrs. They stretch and will shrink back.

Trim back to 2.0mm.

I dont understand well the install procedure. Do yo insert it at 45 degree then tilt the cap to his position?

 

Then you leave it 24h and cut the remaining to 2mm.

 

Sorry for the question but last time I do it was maybe 4 years ago and i dont remember exactly how is the assembly.

And Peter’s method works an absolute treat . Threebond 1215 also good .

Ditto , i always use sealant over the hockey stick seals/1-st bearing cap .. non-hardering anaerobic sealant , not the RTV .

 

Anyways , OE workshop manual states use of sealant on the 1-st bearing cap corners and ends (something which "Haynes" failed to mention !)
