Towing

Hi. Does anyone have an ifo or experience of towing with a 1.9 GTi. I have a classic Eriba Touring Van, braked,

with a weight of 850 kg

I don’t think it would be a particularly confidence inspiring combination, a standard 205 GTI is probably about 900kg, with a caravan of nearly equal mass behind I think it would be a little too much of the tail wagging the dog.

Two of our base model diesels are set up for towing, I fitted both with Gti torsion bars, and auxiliary helper spring kits, on the back trailing arms.

It made a big difference so I`d reccomend that.

I tried the auxilliary spring kits on a car with 16mm torsion bars it was a massive improvement.

As to weight, I have towed a ton + trailer weight unbraked with one, that permanently deformed the torsion bars and dropped the ride height until I put some new bars in.

So I`d reccomend NOT doing that.

My Mrs has for years towed an unbraked 500kg trailer tent the length and breadth of Britain, with no ill effects.(apart from tailbacks and anger) Our cars are in good condition with fresh axles and shockers though.

Towing with an old axle will f*** it up quickstyleee.

I cant remember the towing weights, its in the handbooks, but I seem to remember 750kg?

Not wanting to piss on your chips, but I think there are a lot more suitable cars out there.

May I ask why you want to use a 205?
