Hi All,

I have just recently brought a 1989 1.6 GTI and have noticed that there is an issue on idle, it seems to struggle and cuts out, the only way I can keep it going is by giving it some revs.

Im sure many owners may of had the same problem so I am hoping somebody can point me in the right direction before I send it to a garage.

Many thanks in advance.

When it's hot, cold, or both?

Cold may be the SAD (supplementary air device). Have a Google, loads on it.

Hi,

Does happen when hot or cold.

Its had a brand new air flow meter and everything.

Alot of people keep on mentioning a valve at the bottom of the engine?

Check the throttle initial position is set correctly as detailed in the Haynes -

Also make sure the throttle body and related hoses are clean, take the idle screw out and clean it until it is spotless.
