1992 1.9 GTI (non-Sunroof, non-Cat & non PAS) - Restoration of a 2 owner original car with 79,000 miles

Restoration of a 1992 1.9 GTI in Cherry Red.

A bit of history:

The car was registered by it's 1st keeper in August 1992 and was bought by it's 2nd owner in August 1998.

We bought the car in June 2018 and are it's 3rd owner.

The car was run by it's second owner for a few years until engine problems at 79,000 miles consigned her to the garage for a 15 year sleep.  The 2nd owner decided to wake her up and the recommissioning work (brakes, clutch, fuel pipes etc.) was entrusted to a local garage whose owner was ex-Peugeot Main Dealer.

Unfortunately, the car was never collected by the 2nd owner and the car was gifted to the Garage in lieu of payment.  She then sat for 3 years in the garage until a friend of mine persuaded the garage owner to sell and she then sat in his Dad's garage for further 3 years waiting for restoration.  Having offered to buy the car unseen many times over a beer or two, my friend called me to say "Dad needs the space, if you want her, come and get her".  The following week me and my good friend Rupert went to collect.

We have spoken to the garage who sold her in 1998 and the one that sold her in 2012 and bother offered to buy her un-seen.  A good omen.

First inspection revealed a very original and unmolested car:

  • Very little rust > apart from 10p size spot in passenger footwell and similar size spot in rear floor above exhaust
  • Orignal Speakers
  • Original Parcel Shelf
  • Original Head Unit
  • Original Headlights
  • Original SIEM Fog Lights
  • Zero Accidents with all Original Panels, Factory Welds, Glass, Bumpers, etc...
  • Paint Code on NSF crossmember
  • Factory Jack with little rubber grommet to stop rattles
  • and so on

The faults:

  • Drivers bolster worn
  • The car needs a full windows out re-spray but we have decided to leave the engine bay as-is due to it's originality.

The plan is to keep her as original as possible and we will only be using genuine parts either New Old Stock or parts from the Peugeot Museum in France.

We started the work a few months back so will post some pictures to show progress over the coming weeks/months.

First picture is of her receiving her first wash for 15 years!

Some pictures showing the car after received fresh Cherry Red paint.  Note, the original paint code is not only on the slam panel in the engine bay but on the front left corner behind the front bumper.  We made sure to leave the factory code on and to not paint over.

Rebuilding the Petrol Cap. Prize apart carefully with a screw driver.  The black plastic was sourced from GTI Powers river in France.

Decided to keep as much of the original black plastic mouldings but replace the red inserts with new from the Peugeot Museum.  The picture shows the trim being treated to a coat of Gtechniq C4.  Results are amazing.
