Fitting new valve stem oil seals

Recommended Posts

What’s the preferred method of installing new valve stem oil seals , cylinder head is off the car, I’ve had re-order some more as I managed to mangle a couple.

Clean and oil up the tops of the guides (use engine oil) , oil up the seals as well , tool wise i use small long socket extension with an 11mm socket on the end to press on the seal on the guide , firstly just by hand then tap lightly with smaller/low weight hammer .

It's an easy operation really , just oil up all the seals (bottom side especially) , an dab of oil on the guide tops , fit the seal oiled up into the socket (must be 11mm , so it seats on the metal part of the seal rather than the rubber area) , and be gentile , don't bang them hard with an hammer ! you'll be able to check them visually after the install , if one or a few look higher/level off just tap them some more so they seat on straight .

"The tool" i use ! (fitted the seal inside can see it on the pic) :

Would love having an lathe too Tom !

..there's so much thing that can be done/fabricate on a lathe , especially for us having/working on old cars and doing some "weird stuff" with them !

Practice makes perfect , don't worry , most of us we've all gone through the same process "bend and mend" !
