Engine mount thread is crossthreaded..

Recommended Posts

johnyma22

The M10 thread that sits out of the gear box and runs up to the engine mount that sits just below the battery on my 1.6GTi is cross threaded.

The M10 1.5 Nut comes off the thread when the weight is allowed to rest on it, it's "that bad".

1) Can the entire thread be replaced?  If so, how?

2) Should I attempt to rethread the thread using a thread tap/die set?

Any other suggestions welcome!  I'm up s*its creek a bit with this one!

Warm the aluminium housing of the gearbox up with an oxy torch. This will "break" the thread locker compound and you'll be able to remove the stud easily from the gearbox. It's a relatively simple job if you have the right tools.

As Peter says, the stud can be wound out of the gearbox casing and replace with a new one.

Dont use anything other than a 205 item. The lengths vary and as such the gearbox won't mount properly.

I think the early stud is NLA and later one is still sold as Tom said

1840 28 is the stud,   1841 05 is the washer with the D shaped hole, and 6939 77 is the locking nut.

should all come in at around a tenner, the stud pictured is the later type and they are interchangeable, don't lose the big washer under it!  ( 1841 14 )

If You can be arsed driving over to Hudd`s, you can unscrew one from a scrap gearbox and have it gratis.

Thanks guys I grabbed one from Peugeot Classic Spares (I wanted to grab some other bits at the same time) so I have the part...

That said..  For the life of me I can't get the original thread out..

I tried:

  1. Heating casing around it with blow torch.
  2. Using big pipe wrench to try grab it and it just moves the entire engine
  3. Mig Welding some nuts on impact driving them off (also tried weld and torque wrench).  The welds snapped, dramatically.
  4. Used the two nut on thread trick.

I watched PCS remove it at the garage and it was really easy to remove so I have to assume the one in my running car is seized in good and proper.  I'm defo attacking it right but just hitting a bad one.

I left it to soak in some plusgas over night and gonna add more today and my mate who is a mechanic by trade is going to head over tonight to see if I missed a trick.

Is the gearbox housing Steel or Aluminum?

Cheers!

Woop, after 2 days of plusgas and various attempts I finally got it to break out.

Thanks everyone for input!

For future someones reading this topic, you can use a 16mm sparkplug socket on that bolt to get a grip on it. It's not that obvious, but there are six flat spots on the bolt.
