VGT/VNT turbo Mr muscle

I had a volvo estate to look at and the owner was told he needed a new turbo by the volvo specialist. No boost lack of power.

I asked a few questions and he has never driven it more than 15 miles to his caravn in  5 years ownership.

The VNT/VGT mechanism was gummed up with carbon and when you activated it by pushing with a screwdriver it was stiff and sticking also only moving through part of its travel.

So I took the downpipe off the turbos exhaust port and squirted mr muscle aerosol oven cleaner in it, left it an hour and gave it another dose, did this 4 times over the course of the day and then worked the mechanism with a screwdriver and it loosened up and was snapping back to its stop. Screwed the exhaust back on and off he went, he just rang me from Budapest having driven from Yorkshire and its been perfect and done 50mpg ish.

Result an hours labour and an aerosol from Wilko.

Tom Fenton

I hope you've also instructed him to give it a hard drive every month or so to keep it free moving? Its common on variable vane diesels not driven hard from time to time.
