207 wishbone

Has anyone changed a wishbone on a 207?

I'm looking at a nearside one and the front inner bush bolt is a bit awkward. It goes in from above and there doesn't seem to be a way to remove it without removing the driveshaft first unless I'm missing something?

The 207 front inner bush setup looks quite similar to my 508 (i.e. Bolt goes vertically through bush but it sits below the driveshaft) - When I did the wishbone on my 508 I had to remove the driveshaft to get the bolt out. So wouldn't surprise me if the 207 was similar.

Thanks for the reply even though it isn't what I wanted to hear! It makes a simple job a lot more involved, it's hard to see why they have put it together that way with no concern for serviceability.

I'm wondering what, if anything, is stopping me from cutting the head off of the bolt and dropping it through the subframe then replacing it with a new bolt put in upside down from below?

I can't see any reason why that wouldn't work, the only difference I can see is that the bolt could fall out if it came loose but I don't think that's likely. It would make this job much easier and future work would be more straightforward too.

That's exactly the accepted repair method on Mk2 Mondeo wishbones which have the same issue where you can't withdraw the bolt once everything is assembled at the factory.

Thanks, that's interesting, it does look very similar.

I googled it and was able to find posts about Mondeos immediately but I can't find anyone who has done it to a 207, just a couple of posts where they have ended up removing the driveshaft.

I just had a look in a 207 Haynes manual and it doesn't mention it, they just say remove the bolt! Either it's an oversight or this is only an issue on a GTI which isn't covered by the 207 Haynes.

Never been near a 207, but can you drop the subframe down easily?

I don't know but it doesn't look too bad on servicebox:

It depends what the extensions to the front of the car are like in terms of access. I think the ARB would have to be unbolted too as it wraps around the driveshafts.

Worth a look, I wouldn't go to town, you may be able to slacken things off and get it to lower off on the one side just enough to do what you need to do.

I feel your pain though, the wifes MINI Cooper S failed its test the other year on a wishbone bush, no great shakes I thought, pop it off swap the bush and it will be done and dusted in an hour or so, OH NO, 6 hours later having dismantled half of the front of the bloody car it was done, the only saving grace being that thankfully the bushes on it seem to last a long time and so I shouldn't have to do it again.

Is that the later turbo MINI? If so it's the same engine as the 207 GTI, I've got some jobs to do there as well that look like they're harder than they need to be, mainly the turbo oil pipes.

I just looked at a guide for the MINI and it does look like a crazy amount of stuff has to come off!

No, last of the supercharged, but equally a pig to work on, the clutch took me about 10 hours.

Oil pipes are the whole front end off job!

i recall a specialist charging me not a vast amount for a wishbone change so although I don't know the method I can pass you their details for you to call them ?

can you undo the lower torque link and swing the engine forwards enough to get the bolt out?

I'll have a look, that would make it nice and simple!

I don't know why I didn't consider that, I put a new link on only about a week ago...

I haven't looked at my 207's wishbone, but did replace the wishbones on my 206 back in the days. I can recall that I had to push the hub forward/backwards? (once you removed the wishbone joint from the hub) to move the shaft away from the bolt.

People overhype that job. I do them on Minis without removing any of the front end. Outer heat shield off, cat out, inner heat shield out and there both in front of you. Really common problem with them, along with chains, super knocking fault codes etc etc........

Sounds good! I'm still waiting for a few parts then I'll get stuck in.

I was going to change both the supply and return oil hoses on the turbo and also the seal on the oil filter housing where it goes onto the block. Is there anything else you'd do while it's apart?

I don't know about the mini... I was referring to the 207. The turbo is toight at the front of the engine against the slam panel.

i think the waste gate actuator gets a bit sticky on the turbos on the 207 so maybe check that too?

It's been a while since I last did one. But if I remember correct they just clear with the hub pushed towards the front of the car.

If it don't clear tho you only need to remove the hub nut, knock the driveshaft out the hub and lift it out the way. You won't need to remove it from the box.
