I just wind mine up when I get to my destination

 

Interested if there's a fix too, I've just assumed it needs the mechanism replacing.

Mine did this, I just replaced the winder mechanism. The passenger one still does it on particularly large bumps, but the drivers one is the one I changed and it is solid now.

If you have the patience the regulator can be stripped down and some extra tension put on the tired spring. From memory entails drilling out the rivets on the handle gear which I replaced with bolts. Check first however that none of the gear teeth are excessively worn and slipping.

This can really compromise vehicle security too, but won't post why on open forum!
